(CNN) ? A chorus of whoops and cheers greeted Steven Bridges and Michael Snell as they exited City Hall in Portland, Maine, early Saturday as the first same-sex couple to wed under a new law.
Supporters of the law allowing same-sex marriage ? passed by a referendum in November ? jumped up and down, flashed their cameras and sang the Beatles? ?All You Need Is Love.?
?It?s very surreal still,? Snell said.
The couple did not know they would be the first to take advantage of the new law.
?We finally feel equal, and happy to live in Maine,? Bridges said.
Same-sex marriage rights have been denied in many states in the past, but last month, voters in Maine, Washington and Maryland decided to change that.
The Maine measure states that men and women, ?relating to the marital relationship or familial relationships must be construed to be gender-neutral for all purposes.?
The measure also mentions the right of clergy to refuse to wed gay and lesbian couples if it goes against their religious convictions.
The governments of Maine and Maryland had passed laws permitting same-sex marriage, but activists opposed to the laws collected enough signatures to put them on November?s ballot.
In 2009, a similar referendum in Maine failed when voters rejected the governor?s decision to allow same-sex marriage. This year?s results represent a remarkable turnaround.
A similar scene of jubilation took place in Seattle this month, when same-sex couples were able to exchange vows for the first time.
Newly married same-sex couples in these three states have expressed hope that the U.S. Supreme Court will issue rulings favorable to their marriages.
This month, the justices said they would hear two constitutional challenges to state and federal laws dealing with the recognition of gay and lesbian couples to legally wed.
Oral arguments will probably be held in March, with a ruling by late June.
One appeal to be heard involves the federal Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, which denies federal benefits to same-sex couples legally married in their own states.
The second is a challenge to California?s Proposition 8, a voter-approved measure that took away a right of same-sex marriage that had been approved by the state?s courts.

When I was in my 20s, I couldn't imagine associating the word 'sexy' with anyone over 30. A man over 50? Gross! My perspective has drastically shifted now that I'm in my 50s, dating again after divorce. I feel sexier and happier than ever. And I have dated many men who are quite sexy into their 50s and beyond. The secret does not lie in being as handsome as George Clooney, the sexiest man over 50 (according to a Google search). So, what makes a man sexy over 50?
6 Keys To What Makes A Man Sexy Over 50
1. Confidence, Confidence, Confidence! The number one quality that makes a man sexy at any age is self-confidence. A man over 50 has lived a good chunk of his life. If he's happy with who he's become, he is much more sexy. He displays his confidence in the way he dresses and moves, the way he sits and speaks. He smiles easily. And that ease and comfort make him ?ber-sexy!
2. Brains. Smart is sexy. He's a guy with strong opinions and the ability to express them without offending. He also values what you have to say. Sexy smart is not about how many degrees he has or what Ivy League college he attended. He has common sense from a life well lived and decisions well made.
3. Manliness. It's exciting when a man is bold, takes charge, makes plans; a 'manly' man. Men over 50 tend to be more demonstrative with their praise than the men you dated in your 20s. Isn't that a turn on? Give me a take-charge guy any day over one who's passive. That's sexy!
4. Passion. Whether it's about his work or his life, a man with passion is a big turn-on. Over the age of 50, some men are throwing in the towel. They're looking forward to retiring, golfing and sitting in front of the TV in a big easy chair, slugging down a few brewskies every night. Shoot me! I'd rather be alone for the rest of my life than be with a man who has no passion or vitality. Don't you love a man who's excited about life and all the possibilities for a bright and exciting future, even if he does retire? There is sexiness in living a full, passionate life. Bring it!
5. Fun. Girls just want to have fun. At least this girl does! Being playful brings out the teenager in both partners, which makes the relationship alive and sexy. Remember the hormones that raged in your teens? They come rushing back when you can access that carefree, playful aspect to your relationship, especially when you're over 50. Don't you find that to be sexy?
6. Integrity. Ultimately, all the sexy qualities in a guy don't mean anything if he's not a good guy. A man I once dated described himself as a Tootsie Roll pop: hard on the outside, soft on the inside. What a great metaphor for a macho take-charge guy who has a soft, kind, sweet heart; a romantic who's not afraid to be vulnerable. Because ultimately, the more open and honest the man, the more loving the relationship will be. And that is so sexy!
What do you find sexy in a man over 50? Please share your comments below.

It seems that the Swedish people are not falling for the anti-cash propaganda spewed by private bankers and Riksbank officials, Salerno writes, and are resisting the trend toward a cashless economy.
By Joseph Salerno,?Guest blogger / December 28, 2012
EnlargeThe?war on cash in Sweden?may be stalling. The anti-cash movement has been ?vigorously promoted by major Swedish commercial banks as well as the Riksbank, the Swedish central bank. In fact, for ?three of the four major Swedish banks combined, 530 of their 780 office no longer accept or pay out cash. In the case of the Nordea Bank, 200 of its 300 branches are now cashless, and three-quarters of Swedbank?s branches no longer handle cash. As Peter Borsos, a spokesman for Swedbank, freely admits, his bank is working ?actively to reduce the [amount] of cash in society.? The reasons for this push toward a cashless society, of course, have nothing to do with pumping up earnings from bank card fees or, more important,?freeing fractional-reserve banks from the constraints of bank runs.?No, according to Borsos, the reasons are the environment, cost, and security:??We ourselves emit 700 tons of carbon dioxide by cash transport.?It costs society 11 billion per year.?And cash helps robberies everywhere.? Hans Jacobson, head of Nordea Bank, argues similarly: ?Our mission is to make people understand the point of cards, cards are more secure than cash.?

Fortunately, it seems that the Swedish people are not falling for the anti-cash propaganda spewed by private bankers and Riksbank officials and are resisting the trend toward a cashless economy. It is?reported?that last year the value of cash transactions in Sweden were 99 billion krona ?which represented only a marginal decrease from ten years ago. And small shops continue to do one-third to one-half of their business in cash. Furthermore a study of bank customers satisfaction released by ?the Swedish Quality Index in October 2012, indicated that the satisfaction index was pulled down among customers of Swedbank, Nordea and SEB?by their policy of eliminating cash transactions at their bank branches. Even more heartening?is the fact that Handelsbanken, the largest bank in Sweden, is committed to serving consumers who demand cash. As Kai Jokitulppo, head of private services at Handelsbanken, puts it:
?As long as we know that our customers are asking for cash, it is important that we as a bank [are] providing it. . . . We see places where other banks are taking other decisions, we get customers from them and positive response.?
Fewer then 10 of Handelsbanken?s?461 branches currently do not handle cash and the bank?s goal is to have cash in every branch by the first quarter of 2013.

Many people think basic insurance is all they need.? The fact is, circumstances can quickly and? easily arise that can exhaust basic coverage limits and result in a significant financial impact.? One example of this is a real life case in which the 18 year old son of an insured was involved in an accident while driving a short distance to the store.? The car left the road, and struck a tree.? The teen?s girlfriend was traveling in the car and sustained significant injuries.? She was in the hospital for over a month.? Initially confined to a wheel chair, she was eventually able to walk with crutches and had to undergo lengthy physical therapy.
The driver of the car claimed he was cut off by another vehicle. However, since there were no witnesses and no physical evidence to support the driver?s claim, the insured?s auto policy had to cover the claim.? Luckily, the insured had a personal umbrella policy that provided additional coverage over and above their auto policy.? Without that added coverage, this tragedy could have had a much greater impact on the lives of all involved.? Personal umbrella policies can and do make a difference.? To learn more and find out how affordable they can be, talk to one of our representatives today.

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? A flight packed with Christmas tourists crash-landed on a road in central Myanmar on Tuesday, killing three people and injuring 11, officials said.
Four foreigners were among the injured on the Air Bagan flight, the airline said. It said the fatalities were all Myanmar citizens: a tour guide and an 11-year-old child on board the plane and a man riding a motorcycle on the road where the plane came down.
The flight was carrying 63 passengers, including 51 foreigners, and six crew members from the city of Mandalay to Heho airport in Shan State, the gateway to a popular tourist destination, Inle Lake, Air Bagan said in a brief statement on its Facebook page.
Air Bagan identified the injured tourists as two Americans, a British national and a Korean. It described the incident as an "emergency landing."
Authorities gave a different and more dramatic account, saying the pilot mistook the road for a runway due to bad weather.
"While descending, the plane mistakenly landed ... due to fog beside the runway," state television reported. It said the aircraft made a hard landing on a road and then came to a stop in a nearby rice paddy field.
"The rear end of the plane broke and caught fire," state TV said, carrying a statement posted on Deputy Information Minister Ye Htut's Facebook page. Rescuers brought the fire under control about 45 minutes later, he said.
Witnesses said smoke filled the plane when it hit the ground and was still rising from the plane's badly charred wreckage hours later.
Airport officials in Heho said that injured passengers were taken to a hospital in the nearby city of Taunggyi for treatment.
Air Bagan is one of five private airlines that fly domestic routes in Myanmar. It is a unit of Htoo Trading Company, which is owned by business tycoon Tay Za.

As temperatures fall, it?s time to consider making small home improvements that ultimately help save money on energy bills and improve the air quality for local residents.
The City of Fort Collins Environmental Services Department offers air quality loans to residents to help them make the following home improvements: install a radon mitigation system, upgrade a gas fireplace or wood stove or remove an old wood stove. Loans are available at a minimum of $250 up to $3,000.
According to Environmental Planner Brian Woodruff, ?Our Air Quality Loan Program is simply a great way to improve residents? quality of life with cleaner air in and outside their home.?
Not sure if you need a radon mitigation system? Stop by the Fort Collins Senior Center at 1200 Raintree Dr., or the Fort Collins Development Review Center at 281 North College Ave. and pick up either a short-term test kit at a discounted rate of $4, or a long-term kit for $15.
If you find radon in your home at levels of 4 pCi/L or higher, it?s time to fix the problem.
For more information on the air quality program or to download a loan application, contact the Environmental Services Department at 970-221-6604 or visit fcgov.com/airquality/loan.

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Zac Efron and Marcia Gay Harden are joining Paul Giamatti, Billy Bob Thornton and Jacki Weaver in the cast of "Parkland," the producers announced on Wednesday.
Based on the epic book "Reclaiming History: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy," by the author and former prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi, the adapted screenplay is written by journalist and novelist Peter Landesman, who also will make his directorial debut here.
The book recounts the true story of the chaotic events that occurred at Parkland Hospital in Dallas on the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.
The film, to be shot in Austin, Tex., is destined for a 2013 U.S. theatrical release around the 50th anniversary of the assassination.
It will be produced by Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman and Exclusive Media, who will also be financing.
"Zac Efron continues to impress us with his recent shift into more dramatic roles which showcase his exceptional acting skills, and Marcia Gay Harden is an unparalleled actress who gives tour de force performances in every film she appears," said Guy East and Nigel Sinclair, Exclusive Media's co-chairmen, in a statement. "We look forward to seeing their combined talent in Peter Landesman's powerful and mesmerizing story alongside the excellent cast already attached to this film."

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Rating agency Standard & Poor's on Tuesday raised Greece's sovereign credit rating to B-minus with a stable outlook from selective default, citing Europe's efforts to keep the country part of the euro.
"The upgrade reflects our view of the strong determination of European Economic and Monetary Union (eurozone) member states to preserve Greek membership in the eurozone," S&P said.
"The outlook on the long-term rating is stable, balancing our view of the government's commitment to a fiscal and structural adjustment against the economic and political challenges of doing so," the agency added.
Greece's finance minister, Yannis Stournaras, said the move was encouraging but that the country has more work to do.
"This was a very important decision for Greece but we won't rest," Stournaras said. "It creates a sentiment of optimism but the way ahead is long and steep."
Standard and Poor's had cut the rating to selective default earlier this month after the Greek government invited private sector bondholders to participate in a debt buyback meant to help lower the country's debt burden.
The rating agency said at the time that the consummation of the debt buyback would likely see the selective default cured.
Greece's major lenders - EU paymaster Germany and the International Monetary Fund - both endorsed the result of the bond buyback.
The debt buyback helped convince euro zone partners and the International Monetary Fund to unlock 49.1 billion euros in aid by the end of March.
The Greek economy is expected to slump for a sixth straight year in 2013 but might begin to recover in 2014, Stournaras said earlier this week.
Moody's Investors Service rates the country C; Fitch rates Greece CCC. The ratings from all three agencies are speculative. Dec. 17, 2012 ? Rudolph's nose is red because it is richly supplied with red blood cells which help to protect it from freezing and to regulate brain temperature.
This superior "nasal microcirculation" is essential for pulling Santa Claus's sleigh under extreme temperatures, reveals a study in the Christmas issue published on the British Medical Journal website.
Tiny blood cells (known as micro-vessels) in the nose are vital for delivering oxygen, controlling inflammation, and regulating temperature, but few studies have assessed their function in detail.
Knowing how important this regulation is for flying reindeer, who have to deal with extremes of temperature while pulling a sleigh, researchers in the Netherlands and Norway set out to test whether Rudolph's infamous red nose was due to "a highly dense and rich nasal microcirculation" compared with human noses.
Using a hand-held video microscope, they first assessed the noses of five healthy human volunteers and found a circulating blood vessel density of 15 mm/mm2.
When the technique was applied to two reindeer noses, the researchers found a 25% higher density of blood vessels, carrying a super-rich concentration of red blood cells.
They also found a high density of mucous glands scattered throughout the reindeer noses, which they say helps "maintain an optimal nasal climate during changing weather conditions and extremes of temperature as well as being responsible for fluid transport and acting as a barrier."
Infrared thermal images showed that reindeer do indeed have red noses.
"The microcirculation of the nasal mucosa in reindeer is richly vascularised and 25% denser than that in humans," say the authors. "These factors explain why the nose of Rudolph, the lead flying reindeer employed by Santa Claus to pull his sleigh, is red and well adapted to carrying out his duties in extreme temperatures."

Dec. 17, 2012 ? Researchers at the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center have discovered a new form of cell division in human cells.
They believe it serves as a natural back-up mechanism during faulty cell division, preventing some cells from going down a path that can lead to cancer.
"If we could promote this new form of cell division, which we call klerokinesis, we may be able to prevent some cancers from developing," says lead researcher Dr. Mark Burkard, an assistant professor of hematology-oncology in the Department of Medicine at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.
Burkard presented the finding on Dec. 17 at the annual meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology in San Francisco.
A physician-investigator who sees breast cancer patients, Burkard studies cancers in which cells contain too many chromosomes, a condition called polyploidy.
About 14 percent of breast cancers and 35 percent of pancreatic cancers have three or more sets of chromosomes, instead of the usual two sets. Many other cancers have cells containing defective chromosomes rather than too many or too few.
"Our goal in the laboratory has been to find ways to develop new treatment strategies for breast cancers with too many chromosome sets," he says. The original goal of the current study was to make human cells that have extra chromosomes sets. But after following the accepted recipe, they unexpectedly observed the new form of cell division.
Until now, Burkard and most cell biologists today accepted a century-old hypothesis developed by German biologist Theodor Boveri, who studied sea urchin eggs. Boveri surmised that faulty cell division led to cells with abnormal chromosome sets, and then to the unchecked cell growth that defines cancer. With accumulated evidence over the years, most scientists have come to accept the hypothesis.
Normal cell division is at the heart of an organism's ability to grow from a single fertilized egg into a fully developed individual. More than a million-million rounds of division must take place for this to occur. In each division, one mother cell becomes two daughter cells. Even in a fully grown adult, many kinds of cells are routinely remade through cell division.
The fundamental process of cells copying themselves begins with a synthesis phase, when a duplicate copy is made of cell components, including the DNA-containing chromosomes in the nucleus. Then during mitosis, the two sets are physically separated in opposite directions, while still being contained in one cell. Finally, during cytokinesis, the one cell is cut into two daughter cells, right at the end of mitosis.
Burkard and his team were making cells with too many chromosomes--to mimic cancer. The scientists blocked cytokinesis with a chemical and waited to see what happened.
"We expected to recover a number of cells with abnormal sets of chromosomes," Burkard explains.
The researchers found that, rather than appearing abnormal, daughter cells ended up looking normal most of the time. Contrary to Boveri's hypothesis, abnormal cell division rarely had long-term negative effects in human cells.
So the group decided to see how the human cells recovered normal sets of chromosomes by watching with a microscope that had the ability to take video images.
"We started with two nuclei in one cell," Burkard says. "To our great surprise, we saw the cell pop apart into two cells without going through mitosis."
Each of the two new cells inherited an intact nucleus enveloping a complete set of chromosomes. The splitting occurred, unpredictably, during a delayed growth phase rather than at the end of mitosis.
The scientists did a number of additional experiments to carefully make sure that the division they observed was different than cytokinesis.
"We had a hard time convincing ourselves because this type of division does not appear in any textbook," Burkard says.
Over time, they found that only 90 percent of daughter cells had recovered a normal complement of chromosomes. Burkard would like to leverage that statistic up to 99 percent.
"If we could push the cell toward this new type of division, we might be able to keep cells normal and lower the incidence of cancer," he says.
Burkard now thinks that among all those rounds of cell division an organism goes through, every once in a while cytokinesis can fail. And that this new division is a back-up mechanism that allows cells to recover from the breakdown and grow normally.
The group has dubbed the new type of division klerokinesis to distinguish it from cytokinesis. Burkard enlisted the help of Dr. William Brockliss, UW assistant professor of classics, to come up with the name; klero is a Greek prefix meaning "allotted inheritance."
Collaborators on the project include Dr. Beth Weaver, UW assistant professor of cell and regenerative biology; Dr. Alka Choudhary; Robert Lera; Dr. Melissa Martowicz and Dr. Jennifer Laffin.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Grammy-winning singer and pianist Bruce Hornsby sent a tweet to Ohio State coach Thad Matta on Friday night.
In it, he asked for the seventh-ranked Buckeyes to take it easy on his son, UNC Asheville guard Keith Hornsby, when the teams met on Saturday.
The Buckeyes obliged ? Hornsby lit up the Buckeyes for a career-best 26 points ? but Ohio State still had the last laugh.
"That's just the way it is," Matta cracked, parroting the title of the older Hornsby's biggest hit.
Sam Thompson scored a career-high 18 points and Ohio State (8-1) relished the chance to get out and run in coasting to a 90-72 victory over the Bulldogs (3-7).
Deshaun Thomas had 17 points, Lenzelle Smith Jr. 16 and Evan Ravenel tied a career best with 12 points in the first half for the Buckeyes (8-1), who tuned up for a big showdown next Saturday against No. 9 Kansas in the fourth game in an eight-game homestand.
After playing a series of teams content to slow it down against a lean and fast team, the Buckeyes were like horses let out of a corral.
"We watched film a lot on them the past couple of days and we noticed that they didn't stop the ball particularly well," said Thompson, who electrified the crowd with a breakaway, windmill dunk after the game was long decided. "We knew that if we could get stops, we knew we could push the ball up the floor and could get to the rim and create for ourselves and other people. We definitely tried to capitalize on that."
They outscored the Bulldogs (3-7) 26-2 in fastbreak points and continually got behind them for easy baskets and rim-rattling dunks.
"The part I was most disappointed in from our standpoint is we didn't get back on defense all night long and we let them penetrate," Asheville coach Eddie Beidenbach said. "We didn't get down and play defense like we can. I know Ohio State's really good, but they shouldn't have been able to do that."
The Buckeyes scored on 14 of 19 possessions during one span in the first half and took a 50-35 lead at the break.
They would have been up even more if not for Hornsby, who had 18 points in the opening half while hitting all but one of his eight shots from the field ? including 4 of 5 3-pointers.
Everyone at Ohio State was impressed with the shooting display he put on.
"Honestly, he's a good player," said Smith, who was victimized for several long-range buckets despite playing solid defense. "He came in here rolling. You've got a guy like that with a hot hand, you don't contain him early in the game it's always going to be tougher."
The Buckeyes had three in double figures as they hurried the ball down the floor and frequently scored in transition.
Hornsby had five early points as the Bulldogs trailed 11-7 in the opening few minutes. Then Thomas hit a 3, Smith slashed through the heart of the defense for a layup and Thompson dunked off a fast break pass from Shannon Scott to make it 18-8.
The lead remained near double figures until Ravenel muscled in a shot inside and then hit a 12-foot jumper to make it 40-27.
With the game still played at a fast pace, the Buckeyes pulled away in the early stages of the second half.
Thompson scored seven points as Ohio State ripped off 15 of the first 18 points in the opening minutes to widen the advantage to 65-38. The Bulldogs never pulled close again.
The loudest cheer of the day came with 6:44 left when Thompson took a long pass behind the defense and threw down a windmill dunk that brought the Ohio State bench to its feet.
"I just wanted to do something to get some energy in the gym, pick our guys up and pick the crowd up," said the high-flying wing, who some have called "Slam" Thompson.
Thanks to all of those layups, the Buckeyes shot 59 percent from the field (36 of 61).
Hornsby, with his father watching from behind the Asheville bench, hit 9 of 12 shots from the field including 6 of 8 3-pointers, made both of his free throws and added five rebounds and an assist. Will Weeks added 14 points and Jeremy Atkinson 11.
"I was able to get some shots to go down and had a lot of help from my teammates to help me get open," Hornsby said.
Hornsby's previous career high was 23 earlier this season against another top team, North Carolina State. The Bulldogs hung around in that big intrastate showdown before falling 82-80 on Nov. 23.
"Obviously we didn't do a good enough job of getting our guys to guard him because he's much more athletic than most people think," Matta said. "As a sophomore to come in and do what he did, that was quite a performance."
Despite Hornsby's big day, the Buckeyes were pleased with how things turned out. They know they'll have to run to score in a difficult Big Ten that includes several athletic teams.
"I really like this style and I think it fits well for this team," Smith said. "We got a lot of open looks just by running and playing naturally. We have a lot of athletes on this team. Just getting out and going allows us to be at the top of our game."

Mercedes-Benz has become the latest automaker forced to order a recall due to a potential fire risk on almost 6,000 of its luxury sedans, coupes and crossovers.
A who?s-who of automotive brand names has been caught up by fire-related issues -- ranging from leaky engines to power window switches that could inadvertently short-circuit ? so far this year.
The latest entrant into this select club is Mercedes, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ordering the recall of about 5,800 of the German maker?s products ? covering eight separate models ? because of a faulty fuel filter flange.?
The Detroit Bureau:?Jurors Name North American Car, Truck of the Year Finalists
According to regulators, a defect in the molding process can led the flange to crack and possibly spill gasoline during refueling. That, in turn, could cause a fire.
The models covered by the recall include the C300, CL550, CL63 AMG, E350, GLK350, S400 Hybrid, S550 and S63 AMG.?
The Detroit Bureau:?Romney?s Jeep Claim called the Political ?Lie of the Year?
The maker plans to notify owners and begin the repairs next month ? at no charge ? once dealers across the country have a sufficient supply of replacement parts.
The Mercedes recall follows a series of other fire-related safety actions that now have affected around 4 million vehicles in the U.S. market alone this year.?
The Detroit Bureau:?BMW Teases New M6 Gran Coupe
The largest of the recall was announced earlier in autumn when Toyota recalled 2.5 million vehicles sold in the U.S. ? and nearly 7.5 million worldwide ? due to a faulty window switch that can short-circuit and cause a fire.
Ford most recently recalled its newest Fusion and Escape models because of a potential engine coolant leak. The fluid could come in contact with hot engine components and catch fire. It was the third fire-related recall of the Escape this year.

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) -- The leader of Cyprus' Orthodox Christian Church is urging trade unions not to strike over austerity measures taken by the government.
Cyprus has cut salaries for state workers and a range of benefits ? steps international lenders have demanded in exchange for a bailout.
Archbishop Chrystostomos II said Friday that unions should "stay grounded and not take to the streets."
He said Cypriots will do what it takes to survive tough times ahead, even economizing on food, "but won't go hungry."
Several small protests were held outside parliament this week over austerity measures that Cyprus negotiated with the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
Cyprus is negotiating a bailout for its banks, which were heavily exposed to Greek debt.

In "Les Miserables," Anne Hathway had to bare her head and her soul, but before she and TODAY's Matt Lauer got around to talking about those experiences on Wednesday, he asked her about accidentally baring something else at the New York premiere of the film.
It appeared that she got some of her first photos taken as she exited her car on Monday -- sans underwear, and Hathaway had a very eloquent response to the question of her "wardrobe malfunction."
"It was obviously an unfortunate incident," she said. "It kind of made me sad on two accounts. One was that I was very sad that we live in an age when someone takes a picture of another person in a vulnerable moment and rather than delete it, and do the decent thing, sells it. And I?m sorry that we live in a culture that commodifies sexuality of unwilling participants, which brings us back to 'Les Mis,' that's what my character is, she is someone who is forced to sell sex to benefit her child because she has nothing and there's no social safety net."
Well said. Lauer and Hathaway went on to talk about the film, in which she has a small but pivotal role that required her to have her hair cut off, and lose 25 pounds so she could appear on the edge of death.?
"It was scary," she admitted about losing her hair, particularly because it wasn't something she could prepare for. "There was nothing to do except just let it happen."
But while she has spoken in the past about how she lost the weight, Hathaway remained mum on TODAY -- but with a good, thoughtful reason. "I get nervous talking about it because I find that I don?t want to be seen as trying to glamorize it and there?s a lot of talk and a lot of pressure especially in young girls to lose weight, and ... I didn't do it to get hot, I did it to look like I was dying. Do not try this at home."
"Les Miserables" opens in theaters on Dec. 25.

ABC NEWS EXCLUSIVE: OBAMA PREDICTS GOP WILL CAVE ON TAXES . As the clock ticks toward a tax hike on all Americans in 20 days, President Obama predicted Republicans would join Democrats to extend current rates for 98 percent of earners before the end of the year. "I'm pretty confident that Republicans would not hold middle class taxes hostage to trying to protect tax cuts for high-income individuals," Obama said on Tuesday in an exclusive interview with ABC News' Barbara Walters. "I don't think they'll do that," he said of Republicans allowing tax-rate increases for families earning $250,000 a year or less. http://abcn.ws/TTerEc
OBAMA RECOGNIZES SYRIAN OPPOSITION GROUP. In his interview with ABC's Barbara Walters, President Obama said his administration now formally recognizes the newly formed, leading coalition of Syrian rebels who are fighting to topple Syria's embattled President Bashar Assad. "We've made a decision that the Syrian Opposition Coalition is now inclusive enough, is reflective and representative enough of the Syrian population that we consider them the legitimate representative of the Syrian people in opposition to the Assad regime," Obama said. The announcement grants new legitimacy to the rebel group and marks a new phase in U.S. efforts to isolate the Assad regime. http://abcn.ws/SPylOs

CAN GOP RESCUE ITS 'BRAND' AMONG HISPANIC VOTERS? The Republican group Resurgent Republic and the Hispanic Leadership Network jointly surveyed Hispanic voters in the battleground states of Florida, Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico and will release the results at a briefing this morning at the National Press Club. They shared a preview of their results with The Note. "The results make clear the size of the hole Republicans have dug among Hispanic voters over the past eight years, most notably on the state of the Republican brand? Regardless of how they typically vote Hispanic voters say the Republican party does not respect the values and concerns of the Hispanic community by 51 to 44 percent in Florida, 54 to 40 percent in New Mexico, 59 to 35 percent in Nevada, and 63 to 30 percent in Colorado." However, they note, "These four surveys also demonstrate the potential for Republican candidates in four very different Hispanic electorates, and the short and long-term steps that can improve Republicans' standing in the Hispanic community."
WOMEN OF THE SENATE TELL DIANE SAWYER THEY'D ALREADY HAVE 'FISCAL CLIFF' SOLVED. On Tuesday, ABC's "World News" anchor Diane Sawyer sat down with the historic class of female Senators in the 113 th Congress. With 20 days to go until the nation goes over the so-called fiscal cliff, some female senators told Diane if they were in charge, Congress would already have a deal. "I think if we were in charge of the Senate and of the administration that we would have a budget deal by now," Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, told Diane Sawyer. "What I find is with all due deference to-deference to our male colleagues, that women's styles tend to be more collaborative," Collins said. Diane Sawyer's complete interview will air when the new Congress convenes in January. http://abcn.ws/W41UfO
THE NOTE:
The ABC/Washington Post poll is the latest survey to show President Obama with the upper hand in negotiations over the fiscal cliff ( http://abcn.ws/X8uFqK ) . Nearly twice as many Americans approve of the president's work on the issue compared with that of Speaker John Boehner. However, as Langer Research Associates' Gary Langer writes, "the rating is hardly overwhelming: More Americans approve rather than disapprove of how [Obama's] handling the cliff talks by a narrow 7-point margin, 49-42 percent. But Boehner wins approval from just 25 percent, while 49 percent disapprove; an additional 26 percent don't know enough to say."
Highlighting the deeper problem for Boehner is the fact that while Democrats are united in their approval of Obama's negotiation tactics (a nice fringe benefit of a successful re-election bid), conservative Republicans are decidedly dour.
"While about eight in 10 Democrats and liberals alike approve of how Obama is handling the talks, far fewer Republicans and conservatives, 38 and 35 percent, say the same about Boehner," Langer writes.
And getting conservatives to buy into the bargain is Boehner's big challenge. As the talks drag on, Boehner's ability to keep his members from jumping ship, or publicly criticizing the speaker's position, becomes more tenuous.
Boehner took to the House floor yesterday and asked, "Where are the spending cuts? ? The longer the White House slow walks this process, the closer our economy gets to the fiscal cliff."
As the New York Times' Jackie Calmes and Jonathan Weisman write today, Boehner's public posturing is focused as much on keeping his base happy as pushing the president. ( http://nyti.ms/Xb2cR5 )
His statement seemed directed as much at Republican lawmakers and party activists-to reassure them that he was fighting the good fight against government spending, given Republicans' likely concessions on taxes-as at the president and the broader public."
Even so, writes The Washington Post's Rosalind S. Helderman, "[f]or now, many of the 87 GOP freshmen elected in 2010-more than 70 of whom won reelection last month and will return as sophomores in January-are giving Boehner the benefit of the doubt."
The question now, is for how long? Boehner will meet with his conference today, but ABC's John Parkinson reports that he won' t bring a deal to the meeting.

MICHIGAN GOVERNOR SIGNS RIGHT-TO-WORK BILL AMID PROTESTS. On Tuesday Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder signed a right-to-work bill limiting union power into law in his state, reports ABC's Elizabeth Hartfield. "I view this as an opportunity to stand up for Michigan's workers-to be pro-worker," Snyder said in a press conference. "I don't view this as anti-union at all ? I believe this is pro-worker." Earlier in the day the GOP-controlled statehouse approved a law that would make the payment of union dues voluntary for private-sector unions and most public-sector unions (police and firefighters would be exempt.) The bill was approved by a vote of 58-51. In anticipation of the vote, thousands of protesters descended on the statehouse as early as 5 a.m. on Tuesday. Later in the day, the demonstrations moved to the Romney building-which is named after former Michigan Gov. George Romney (father of Mitt)-where Snyder has an office. http://abcn.ws/W4jUqt
NORTH KOREA FIRES LONG-RANGE ROCKET IN DEFIANT MOVE. The Washington Post's Chico Harlan reports, " North Korea on Wednesday successfully fired into orbit a long-range rocket carrying a satellite, an outside aerospace monitoring organization said, a major advance in the authoritarian nation's weapons program. According to the North American Aerospace Defense Command, a joint organization of the United States and Canada, North Korea "deployed an object that appeared to achieve orbit" after the first and second stages of the rocket dropped into the sea." http://wapo.st/Zdv6VV
GOV. HALEY CONSIDERS POLITICS OF APPOINTMENT. Roll Call's Abby Livingston and David Drucker report, " Haley is a rising star in national Republican circles and a tea party favorite. But at home, the first-term governor has struggled politically, fighting with Republicans in the Legislature and others in the party while enjoying lackluster support from independent voters. Haley appears safe from a primary challenge, but some polls have suggested that she could be vulnerable in the general election, despite the state's strong conservative bent. The Senate appointment could help Haley address some of these challenges, GOP operatives based in South Carolina and others with strong ties to the state said she is likely to take full advantage of the opportunity as she considers from a narrowed pool of five potential candidates- Rep. Tim Scott, Rep. Trey Gowdy, former state Attorney General Henry McMaster, former first lady Jenny Sanford and Catherine Templeton, the director of the state Department of Health and Environmental Control." http://bit.ly/STNoYs
CAN BOEHNER GET THE VOTES? The New York Times' Jackie Calmes and Jonathan Weisman report, " with negotiations quickening on Tuesday to prevent a year-end fiscal crisis, White House officials once again are confronting a vexing question: Can Speaker John A. Boehner deliver enough Republican votes for whatever deficit-reduction plan he and President Obama might decide? On Monday, the president presented a new offer and on Tuesday, Mr. Boehner answered back as he and the president conferred by telephone. That talk came two days after a one-on-one meeting in the Oval Office without staff members present ? The president has no choice but to rely on Mr. Boehner, who leads Republicans' only center of power." http://nyti.ms/SUMRWo
MCCONNELL WANTS SPENDING DETAILS. The Associated Press's Donna Cassatt reports: " Senate Republican Leader Mitch Connell insisted on Tuesday that President Barack Obama and Democrats spell out where they would cut government spending as part of any massive budget deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff" double hit of automatic tax hikes and spending cuts. ? ' The president seems to think that if all he talks about are taxes, and that's all reporters write about, somehow the rest of us will magically forget that government spending is completely out of control, and that he himself has been insisting on balance,' McConnell said in remarks on the Senate floor." http://bit.ly/TUAKbH
CORPORATE TAXES ON THE TABLE IN CLIFF TALKS. The Wall Street Journal's Damian Paletta, Janet Hook and Carole E. Lee report, " The White House has told Republicans it would include an overhaul of the corporate-tax code as part of any deal to reduce the deficit, people familiar with the talks said, a move to court business groups as budget negotiations intensify. Corporate taxes hadn't until now been part of budget talks aimed at averting spending cuts and tax increases set for January. Much of the focus has instead been on the expiring individual income-tax rates." http://on.wsj.com/XaLfWS
SEN. LINDSEY GRAHAM: NO DEFENSE CUTS UNTIL IRANIAN NUCLEAR THREAT ENDS. Wartime is no time for defense cuts, says Lindsey Graham. ABC's Chris Good reports: the South Carolina senator told a conservative audience on Tuesday he would oppose defense cuts in any fiscal-cliff deal because "we are at war." Without mentioning Afghanistan, Graham called out Iran, Syria and broader instability in the Middle East. "I want the Iranian nuclear threat to be resolved before [agreeing to] a hundred, a hundred fifty billion dollars beyond the $489 [billion]" in defense cuts already enacted in 2011, Graham said. http://abcn.ws/YXXz38
MICHELLE OBAMA COLLECTS TOYS FOR TOTS WITH MARINES. First lady Michelle Obama volunteered with the Marine Corps' Toys for Tots campaign Tuesday, continuing a tradition she's made with the organization each year since entering the White House reports ABC's Matt Larotonda. Toys for Tots is a volunteer organization that collects gifts for needy children. Before joining service members in sorting the toy and clothing donations into large boxes for delivery, Obama thanked the assorted volunteers, which were overwhelmingly military, for taking time for the program during the holiday season. http://abcn.ws/VBauAe
FISCAL CLIFF SPURS POCKETBOOK WORRIES. A new Gallup poll finds that 64 percent believe there would be a negative effect on their "personal financial situation" if "the fiscal cliff tax increases and spending cuts go into effect," while 33 percent said they don't, ABC's Chris Good reports. Among key subgroups, just about everyone is worried. Concerns were higher (68 percent) among lower-income households, making less than $36,000 per year, than among Gallup's two higher-income brackets (62 percent in each). Those with children under 18 (67 percent) were more concerned than those without (63 percent). http://abcn.ws/Uy5zPM
MYSTERY COMPANY THE LARGEST CORPORATE DONOR OF 2012. USA Today's Fredreka Schouten and Christopher Schnaars report, " A company created less than two months before Election Day was the largest corporate donor of the 2012 elections and remains shrouded in mystery weeks later. The company, Specialty Group Inc., operated by Knoxville attorney William Rose, donated nearly $10.6 million to a Tea Party-affiliated super PAC in the campaign's final weeks as the group blistered candidates across the country with attack ads, new campaign reports show." http://usat.ly/XPrOrA
THE RESET: DEBT LIMIT LOOMS AS NEXT FISCAL CLIFF. The AP's Tom Raum reports, " we now know what's on the other side of that menacing year-end "fiscal cliff." Another cliff. While White House and Republican congressional leaders labor behind closed doors to cut a deal to steer clear of the first cliff - mandatory tax increases and spending cuts due to hit in early January - another treacherous economic precipice looms. It's when the government will again bump up against the congressionally-set debt ceiling." http://apne.ws/VUOLt9

NATIONAL TAXPAYERS UNION WARNS OF "SIGNIFICANT, LAST DAMAGE" IF TAX HIKES IMPLEMENTED IN 'FISCAL CLIFF' DEAL. The National Taxpayers Union will send a letter to the Hill on Wednesday urging Congress to "carefully consider the relative merits of tax increases and spending restraint." The letter has been signed by 180 economists, including two former OMB directors, Doug Holtz-Eakin and James Miller. " Increasing taxes would likely slow or reverse our nation's fragile economic recovery and undermine long-term growth," NTU argues in the letter. "Restraining the growth of expenditures, however, would help stabilize the government's fiscal imbalance and create a more conducive environment for robust expansion." http://bit.ly/QUtvko
