Pacino movie films in middle of concert by Chicago

(AP) ? An Al Pacino movie broke out in the middle of a concert by the band Chicago, with thousands of fans serving as extras.

Cameras were wheeled onstage during intermission of the group's show at the Greek Theatre on Friday night to film a scene from Pacino's upcoming movie "Imagine," in which he plays aging rock star Danny Collins.

With coaching from the director, the crowd chanted the name of Pacino's character as the 73-year-old actor walked on stage to sing "Hey Baby Doll" in a black suit. The movie co-stars Michael Caine, Annette Bening and Jennifer Garner.

"This is an improvisation," Pacino told the crowd. "You just came in and got it. That's not easy."

Chicago's band members remained on stage to watch and clap along during the 25-minute filming. After a few takes, the crowd grew restless and there was scattered booing for the real musicians to resume playing.

Earlier in Chicago's set, Joe Mantegna of CBS' "Criminal Minds" joined his hometown band to sing "If You Leave Me Now."

Pacino returned to the stage during Chicago's encore and sang and danced to their hit "25 or 6 to 4."

"For a shy guy from the South Bronx, this has been great," Pacino said.

Facebook comes close to IPO price

Facebook's stock came within pennies of its 38 US dollar (?24.97) initial public offering price for the first time since its rocky initial public offering more than a year ago.

Shares of Facebook rose 2.18 dollars (?1.42), or 6.2%, to close at 37.61 dollars (?24.71) on Tuesday. The stock hit 37.96 dollars (?24.80) in afternoon trading.

The world's biggest online social network has been on a roll since it reported stronger-than-expected earnings on July 24. Investors are especially upbeat about its fast-growing mobile advertising revenue.

Facebook's ability to grow mobile revenue was one of the biggest concerns in the weeks leading up to its IPO last year. Investors were worried that its ad business was not moving to mobile gadgets as quickly as its user base.

Facebook now derives 41% of its ad revenue from mobile advertising.

HTC One mini review

HTC One mini review an attractive middleweight smartphone with some drawbacks

Just weeks after we put the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini through its paces, we're looking at the HTC One mini, another attempt to shrink a flagship down into a smaller (and cheaper) package. As you'd expect, the 4.3-inch mini looks much like the full-sized version, and that goes for both the hardware and software. In addition to its similar-looking aluminum-and-plastic frame you'll find both a 4-megapixel Ultrapixel camera sensor and HTC's Sense 5 UI, meaning automatic video highlights, Zoe and BlinkFeed all make an appearance here as well. There are, however, a few hardware drawbacks compared to the original, with the IR blaster, optical image stabilization on the camera and NFC stripped out for space- and cost-saving reasons. Can HTC launch a mid-range phone that won't get lost between similarly priced offerings and last year's discounted flagships? We'll try to reason that out after the break.

Six High-Performance App Marketing Strategies - Direct ... - DMNews

Mobile advertising is here to stay, with worldwide revenues leaping a massive 82.8% to $8.9 billion last year from $5.3 billion in 2011, according to new numbers from the IAB. With more than half of the adult U.S. population using smartphones and 900,000 apps in the Apple App Store, it's no wonder that mobile app publishers and other brands are hopping on the mobile advertising bandwagon to get their brands out in front of the skyrocketing number of mobile users. But with increasingly fierce competition, brands face the enormous challenges of achieving discoverability, sustaining user engagement, and, ultimately, driving monetization.

Successfully marketing your app requires much more than strategic media buying, compelling creative units, and catchy social media tactics. High performance mobile app marketers have a laser-like focus on targeting, acquiring and retaining loyal users?those who take a specific desired action, such as an in-app purchase. It's these loyal users who become repeat customers, word-of-mouth advocates, and deliver real, ongoing ROI.

Here are six tips for marketing your app, focused on driving more of these critical loyal users. They're based on more than 120 billion user-based app actions recorded on our platform, and they're proven marketing tactics for putting your app ahead of the competition:

  • Establish goals for loyal users.

Exactly what constitutes a loyal user will vary from app to app, and the definition will be tied directly to your marketing and business goals. Perhaps it's someone who launches the app frequently, or someone who makes an in-app purchase or registers via email. Defining that metric before launching any acquisition campaigns is important. You'll also need to determine the expected lifetime value per user so you can set cost-per-conversion targets (i.e., determine how much to pay for different traffic volumes to deliver the best possible ROI).

  • Promote your app across multiple traffic sources.

There are several types of traffic sources for mobile apps: ad networks, real-time bidding exchanges, social networks, such as Facebook, and more. Using just one source?or even one from each type?gives you too small a universe to be successful. You'd be missing out on valuable opportunities to identify the best sources for large volumes of loyal users. In fact, working with several traffic sources can improve loyal acquisition results by up to five times.

  • If Facebook isn't part of your strategy?think again.

Just a few months ago, Facebook was barely part of the mobile app advertising mix but, in a short span of time, we've seen brand spending on Facebook mobile app install ads grow by more than 500%. Facebook mobile ads are not only more cost-efficient but they also deliver a higher percentage of loyal, engaged users compared to other paid advertising channels. According to our data, the cost to acquire loyal app users is up to 55% lower via Facebook mobile install ads. Additionally, Facebook provides these results at a significant volume.

  • Track post-download activity and revenue.

As your mobile ad campaigns are running it's critical to track users' post-download activities and tie this data back to its traffic source, ad creative, and other campaign variables. This helps to pinpoint which specific traffic sources and campaigns are driving your most loyal users?not just the most downloads?as well as the most revenue.

  • Use direct attribution for the best insight into your results.

Ad tracking is a mission-critical component of most app marketing programs. By being able to attribute downloads and post-download events, like in-app purchases, to the marketing source, app marketers harness a powerful way to gain insights that drive business and deliver ROI. Be sure to use platform-specific, standard attribution tools (Apple's IDFA or Android's Referrer) to measure exact marketing results.

Relying on traditional tools such as CPM (cost per thousand impressions) and CPC (cost-per-click) as sole measures of ROI ignores the powerful engagement potential that mobile apps offer. Instead, we urge brands to utilize a new mobile measurement metric: CPEm?cost per mobile engagement. CPEmis defined as the cost of an app launch, an in-app purchase, or a registration. It's a far more meaningful tool that captures the extended relationship mobile apps create as consumers launch and relaunch apps, spend time in sessions, make in-app purchases, and register with the brand. In fact, in a study of more than 2.4 billion app marketing data points, we found that the average CPEm for mobile app advertising is one-tenth of the cost of a desktop keyword click.

Mobile app marketing shouldn't require guesswork. By deploying these tested strategies and tactics, brands can achieve high-performance results with their mobile app marketing campaigns that not only drive business objectives, but also acquire large volumes of loyal users.

China?s Domesday debt survey: James Saft

July 30 (Reuters) ? Like William the Conquerer before him,
Premier Li Kequing is initiating his own Domesday survey in
China, and this time the attempt to curb local abuses of power
will have global economic consequences.

China?s State Council, chaired by Premier Li, has ordered
the National Audit Office to begin auditing what could total $2
trillion or $3 trillion of debt taken on by local governments.

The Audit Office will suspend other work and give all staff
?crash? training so that auditors can begin fanning out across
the country this week, according to a report by the state-run
People?s Daily.

The clear implication is that China is seeking to rein in
local governments, which have helped along what is clearly a
boom and may be a bubble by borrowing and spending freely on
local development. For China, this will act as another brake on
already slowing growth. For the rest of the world, it means less
demand, especially for the kinds of raw materials and energy
which go into real estate development and infrastructure.

William ordered the 1086 ?Domesday Book? census of property,
so called because it was said to be as thorough and
wide-reaching as the final judgement, shortly after the Norman
conquest of England in order to nail down who owned what and who
might have usurped something belonging to the crown he now
possessed. Premier Li, who assumed office in March, has a
related but different problem. Despite laws against it, local
governments have taken on huge debts, an amount estimated by the
last audit at about $1.75 trillion at the end of 2010.

Analysts believe that has grown substantially since then,
leading to growing concern about the country?s overall debt
profile. While the IMF has estimated China?s total government
borrowing to be a bit less than 50 percent of annual GDP (as
compared to about 100 percent in the U.S.) local government debt
has grown faster, and pays a higher rate of interest, than forms
of borrowing more tightly controlled by the central government.

Of particular interest is a story in China Business News,
citing an unnamed source, which said China had decided that it
should cap its fiscal deficit at 3 percent of GDP, well below
the 5 percent or more many economists estimate it may now be. To
do that would likely require quite a savage cutting back on
local government debt, or for central government to content
itself with a smaller piece of the pie and all the diminished
opportunities for reward, control and influence that implies.

THE HAND AUDITS ITS FINGERS

Taking a step back, the most surprising thing about this
whole story is that a government, much less one in a
single-party state, needs an audit to know how much its
constituent parts have borrowed. Little wonder ratings agencies
have expressed concern about the debt practices.

But the relationship between local and central government in
China is complicated, and, in fact, local authorities have
exercised much discretion in directing development, and, despite
rules to the contrary, contracted much debt to fund it.

Because rural land in China is held, in essence,
collectively, there is a huge and profitable opportunity for
local governments in re-badging rural land as urban or
industrial, paying off its occupiers, and selling rights or
leases on for development. So-called Local Government Financing
Vehicles are set up to do an end-run around prohibitions on
local debt and allow governments to borrow the money needed to
fund both development and the infrastructure it requires.

Much of this development has arguably been of low quality in
recent years, producing extra manufacturing capacity which may
not be needed and apartments to meet speculative demand. China
clearly needs to transition to a model in which it depends less
on investment and more on consumption, and reining in
helter-skelter local development is as good a place to start as
any.

That said, a crackdown on local borrowing will have large
repercussions. As the U.S. demonstrated in the last decade,
borrowing and spending money to dig holes in the ground and put
up buildings is a great way to give the appearance of strong
economic growth. Limit that and growth goes down with it, though
perhaps the growth you get is more stable. Estimates of the
likely run-rate of Chinese growth have been dropping sharply,
and this will only exacerbate this trend.

Like everything in China today, what happens there matters
everywhere. The big and easy-to-pick losers are the commodities
and energy used in developing infrastructure, and those
countries, such as Australia, which produce them.

San Jose State Baseball Recruits for 2014

As a followup to the interview with Coach Nakama I thought it would be a good idea to see what newbies he's bringing in to help him effect change. Reviews for the other programs in the MWC and their recruits will follow.

Here?s some info I found on baseball recruits for next year's Spartans. Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Don?t hear that anymore. I've already posted an interview with the coach to see if he has any other commits on board that we don?t know . The list is fairly long which is no surprise as Nakama feels there must be more competition for playing time for a team that did not fare too well last year. Read on:

Andrew Hermanson, 2B, Great Oak HS, Temecula, CA

He batted third in the order for an ordinary team and hit .346. No homeruns but he could hit. Unless he?s hiding something I don?t see him elbowing out Valdez next year.

Carter Johnson, P, La Costa Canyon HS, Carlsbad, CA

Carter looks like he may help the staff. No where to go but up, right? he was 6-4 and 2.49 in 73 IP. 85 strikeouts in those innings is the good part. He had 32 walks also and that should improve. He had 8 games where he went 6 or more innings. That shows trust from the coach.

Andrew Herrera, RHP, San Mateo CC, San Mateo, CA

He?s 6?4? and 225 so he fits the classic mold for a pitcher and went to Wilcox HS which is a public school powerhouse in the San Jose area. He was 6-0 and 2.57 in 56 IP. He had 36/13 K/BB ratio. Not a power pitcher but gets guys out. Another welcome addition.

Jake Swiech, RHP, Paraclete HS, Lancaster, CA

His secondary position is catcher but I doubt he?ll get a look there. He?s 6?3? and 195 which says he?ll get bigger. When?s the last time the Spartans had a tall rangy catcher? Never? That?s about right. His final stats had him at 7-3 and 1.16. He plays American Legion ball in the summer and that is always a plus. They have him listed as a catcher. Hmm.

Alec de Watteville, INF, Oak Ridge HS, El Dorado Hills, CA

Alec hit .379 and 1 his senior year on a pretty good team (19-9). He comes from the Sacramento area and we all know that is a baseball hotbed. Sacramento State is getting fat by just recruiting within an hour?s drive.

Michael Breen, SS, San Benito HS, Hollister, CA

A local kid. He hit .269 with 1. I don?t know what to say about that other than he has a lot of convincing to do. He?ll be trying to win a starter?s position as SS is wide open.

Brett Bautista, OF, Granite Bay HS, Granite Bay, CA

Brett hit .301 with no homeruns. He doesn?t strike out but he doesn?t walk much either. He played in a tough conference so that always counts for something.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa, SS, Mid-Pacific Institute HS, Honolulu, HI

I?ll go out on a limb here. I think this is the kid who will be the shortstop next year. His team was the state champion and he made the All-Tournament team as an infielder. The one article I read said ?he made some dazzling plays at shortstop?. I can live with shortstops and catchers that have trouble at the plate if they deliver in the field. I could find little else (drafted and signed by Texas Rangers).

Michael Wright, RHP, Elk Grove HS, Elk Grove, CA

Michael hit .333 with 4 homeruns this past season. That?s a lot of homeruns for a SJS recruit. He really shown as a pitcher as he ended up 7-0 and 1.68 over 62 IP. He struck out 55 and walked 24 which ain?t bad. His WHIP was a bit over 1.00 at 1.09 which is also quite good. Doesn?t appear to be a power pitcher but gets guys out. Another pretty good high school pitcher. Good enough for third team All-State for CalHiSports.

Tyler Olivet, OF, Cabrillo CC, Aptos, CA

Ty hit .386 with no homeruns this past season. I?m wondering if Mike Gerlach (a graduated player who played at Cabrillo before transferring) gave him the heads up about SJS and its baseball program. He played at Los Gatos so he?s very local. His OBP was a very good .500 so he gets on base; a lot.

Jace Puckett, LHP, Feather River CC, Quincy, CA

As a sophomore at the juco level he was 10-3 and 1.35. Here?s a bit more to whet your appetite. His strikeout to walks ratio was better than 2:1 and his WHIP was under 1.00 as he gave up 55 hits and walked 31 in 93 IP. That is very good indeed. He led his team in just about every category.

Logan Handzlik, RHP, Hoover HS, Fresno, CA

Logan was 2-2 and 1.36 in 36 IP. He struck out 41 and walked 13. His WHIP was just a tad under 1.00 so he certainly has all his numbers in the right place. Notice his home town. He was nominated for All-State honors his junior year while at Oakdale HS.

Logan Lanza, RHP, Rodriguez HS, Fairfield, CA

This Logan was 4-4 and 2.61 his senior season. He started 11 games and the team was just 14-14 so they depended upon him a lot. He pitched 45 innings while striking out 48 and walking 26 (a bit high). Those numbers aren?t ?Holy crap!? good but good none-the-less. He will get the opportunity to pitch in his first year at the D1 level.

Austin Ragsdale, RHP, Bradshaw Christian HS, Sacramento, CA

The list seems to go on and on. Here?s another late signee that happens to be a pitcher. This kid seems to be very good also. Austin hit .446 with 5 homeruns and that?s not his strength. As a pitcher he was 9-1 and 0.60 (not a typo) in 58 IP. He struck out 76 (again, not a typo) and walked 14. I don?t know what he throws but, they can?t hit whatever it is. He gave up 36 hits over those innings which works out to a WHIP of 0.86. Where is he finding these guys??? There?s more; he made MaxPreps? 2013 California All-State Baseball Team.

Jonathan Hernandez, LHP, LA Harbor CC, Wilmington, CA

Another arm from the southland. He was 3-2 and 3.21 for a less than a .500 team. I know, I know, his 3.21 ERA doesn?t sound like much but it was the best on the team (6.39) by more than a run. That stands out. His strikeouts (22) were third on the team but he did it in 33 IP and that also stands out. His WHIP is just over 1.00 so he?s good there also. Overall, a good pick-up.

Jack Veasey, C, Acalanes HS, Lafayette, CA

I couldn?t find a lot about Jack other than an article by Jimmy Durkin (who with the San Jose Mercury seems to have his hand on the pulse of just about everything sports-wise). Before the season started he picked Acalanes as the eventual champion (they were) and had Veasey as one of the players to watch in the division.

Microsoft shares hit hard after profit badly misses expectations

Microsoft Corp. fell the most in more than four years after fourth-quarter profit missed analysts' projections by the biggest margin in at least a decade as demand weakens for Windows-run personal computers.

Results also were hurt by a $900 million writedown of Surface tablet inventory, shaving 7 cents a share from earnings. Excluding that, profit was 66 cents a share, Microsoft said Thursday, trailing analysts' 75-cent prediction.

Stung by a Surface device that few consumers want, the company faces a shift by consumers to mobile gadgets that offer many of the same features as laptops and desktops at lower prices.

CEO Steve Ballmer's effort to focus the company on devices and services may reduce profit as both areas carry thinner margins than traditional software.

"PCs were just uglier than people thought they would be, and people also had more Surface sales in there than there were," said Mark Moerdler, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. in New York, who rates Microsoft shares outperform.

Microsoft fell 11 percent to $31.40 at Friday's close in New York, the most since January 2009. The stock has gained 18 percent this year, compared with a 19 percent increase in the Standard & Poor's 500 Index.

PC shipments fell 11 percent last quarter, Framingham, Mass.-based IDC said. Surface, Microsoft's first-ever computer, shipped just 900,000 units in the last two quarters, IDC said.

Saturday's local baseball roundup: Tar Heel's late home run boosts Wilson past Pilots

The surging Peninsula Pilots met their match Saturday night in North Carolina, falling 4-3 to the Wilson Tobs.

North Carolina Tar Heels player Korey Dunbar belted a two-run, go-ahead homer to cap a three-run eighth inning for the Tobs, who overcame the Pilots' two-run lead.

Old Dominion's Jordan Negrini homered for the Pilots (24-17), who fell to 10-4 in the second half of the CPL season.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Pilots' Jordan Negrini of Old Dominion broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run homer over the left-field wall, scoring East Carolina's Garrett Brooks and giving Peninsula a 3-1 edge.

But in the bottom of the eighth inning, Wilson scored on a double-play grounder, making it 3-2. Gloucester High graduate Joey Burney of ODU then singled, prompting Pilots coach Hank Morgan to bring in closer Ryan Cook.

He suffered his first loss of the season as the initial batter he faced, Dunbar, laced a ball over the wall in left-center to capture a 4-3 lead.

International League:

If not for newcomer Eric Thames, Norfolk would've been no-hit by Charlotte as the Knights beat the Tides 5-2 before 8,113 at Harbor Park.

Thames had two hits, including a solo home run in the fourth, but the rest of the Tides were 0-for-23 against winner Andre Rienzo, Leyson Septimo and Jake Petricka, the White Sox affiliate's pitchers.

Former Tide Steve Tolleson had a home run and two RBI for Charlotte.

Eastern League:

The Richmond Flying Squirrels (47-54) earned their fifth victory in six games, defeating Bowie 2-1 in 10 innings before 8,785 at The Diamond.

Javier Herrera hit a single to right field to score Ryan Lollis for the walk-off victory.

Niuman Romero's RBI double to left field put the Baysox (51-49) ahead 1-0 in the third, but former U.Va. player Jarrett Parker scored on reliever Oliver Drake's wild pitch in the seventh to force a tie.

The outcome likewise located that your 20-30% join rate with regard to special online people to listed gamers as well as a coming back again targeted visitor to be able to authorized guitar player join rate associated with 50 percent.
These types of findings are based on actual records and with out advertising and marketing charges. Many of us estimation which long lasting promotion assistance can certainly enhance the average customer life time expectations and salary through around totally.
Offering operational expenses never expand since fast while salary, often the profit proportion is going to be more achieable. The actual likely revenue is definitely 30-50% through the complete cash flow caused by advertising and marketing prices, cash incentives in addition to in business expenditures.
Still to be able to take care of large quantity traffic along with coexisting buyers is not really an easy task and be successful requires a powerful dime market software system.

This provided a terrible title on the sector in its entirety in addition to failed to do any very good to the ones that have been reliable as well as truly operate by people who wished shoppers to save lots of when setting up a benefit. Lots of penny online auctions sealed go shopping in this particular phase.
Following this, the actual finest survived. Right now, there is also a obvious down tendency with regard to volume of brand-new visitors. As a result, companies have a tendency see this specific as being an uncomplicated profit-making plan any more and they are generally obligated to view this dime auctions certainly are a authentic home business and like any enterprise, have to have preliminary capital, as well as responsibility from the operator. This is actually the merely method for attracting customers who?ll continue being loyal.
The brand new period the cause given rise to a number of brand-new revolutions. Like typically the increase on the so called ?timerless any amount of money auctions? has been a great signal regarding bidders who all dislike regular deals plus the idea of termes conseill?s which can be exercised. These kinds of assist appeal to yet another type of buyers who is going to spend more and become far more reassured of a win, in order that overall they can spend less as opposed to shedding.
So where will the future of typically the dime retail market sit? I really believe it depend on real organizations which pull through via a standing of following your rules for shoppers in addition to which are within it for any years to come. Have a look at Quibids, that is certainly currently the greatest dime public auction on earth. It decided not to choose short-cuts in any way, and even though a number of occasions overtook the item for a small-time, ultimately, it had been Quibids which often ruled substantial. This is how organizations earn in the long term.
With regard to small web-sites, they have to think of improving. How are these people different from various other very similar websites? If the idea is a lot like Quibids, why should My spouse and i ever check out your web site with rely on difficulties once i can perform the identical at a web site My partner and i rely on a lot more? You have to consider in terms of the people, certainly not your own productivity solely.
The positive now a number of new dollar online auctions are definitely searching for, particularly the ones that are looking to help make the timerless dollar auction type become more and more well-liked.
Originating from a bidder perspective, best penny auctions sites you must know all of the different sorts of any amount of money auctions which can be on the market, so you truly understand and also realize what is best for you. So what can you want? What is their putting in a bid choices? What is the threat threshold and how much threat do you want to take? These are definitely are just some of typically the concerns that you need to response prior to going ahead using getting started brand-new web-sites and trying away oceans all over again. You should analysis the fresh products likewise.

Ex-KPMG partner pleads guilty in trading case

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A former partner at the giant accounting firm KPMG LLC pleaded guilty Monday to a securities fraud charge that authorities said involved providing insider information to a friend who plied him with cash, a Rolex watch and other luxury items.

Scott London entered the plea in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles to the felony count that carries a maximum 20-year prison term. He's scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 21. His attorney could argue for a lesser sentence.

Prosecutors said London gave privileged information to friend and jewelry store owner Bryan Shaw over several years.

Shaw then used the information to trade in advance of announcements for KPMG clients such as Herbalife Ltd. and Skechers USA Inc., authorities said. He is estimated to have reaped more than $1 million in profits.

Shaw has pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy and could face up to five years in prison when he is sentenced. In his plea agreement, London acknowledged that he disclosed inside information to Shaw regarding at least 14 separate earnings announcements or acquisitions for KPMG clients.

London discovered that he was the target of an investigation when the FBI came to his home early this year with a picture of him accepting cash from Shaw, according to his lawyer, Harland Braun. London then spoke with investigators for three hours.

After the plea hearing, Braun said London's motivation was personal, trying to help his longtime friend Shaw when his jewelry business was foundering.

"The families went on vacations together," said Braun. "Shaw said his business was in deep trouble and Scott did something stupid to help him."

The lawyer said London received payments and gifts from Shaw totaling about $50,000 over two years and believed his friend had made no more than $200,000 on his trades. London was shocked when he found out that Shaw had made $1.2 million, Braun said.

A brokerage firm, suspecting irregularities in Shaw's trades, contacted the FBI and Securities Exchange Commission. Shaw then agreed to cooperate with authorities in wiretapping and photographing his friend. The men were photographed exchanging a paper bag of cash in an alley near Shaw's Encino jewelry store, authorities said.

After London was confronted by investigators, he acted quickly to make it clear he was the only person involved in leaking information from the company, Braun said, explaining a prolonged investigation could have damaged the company and its clients.

"He put his clients and his firm first and decided to do the right thing," Braun said.

London had a distinguished 30-year career at KPMG. He supervised more than 500 accounting professionals at the firm and personally handled audits for major KPMG clients. He will no longer be allowed to practice as a CPA.

The SEC is seeking unspecified penalties and restitution against London and Shaw.

WikiLeaks: Snowden makes expanded asylum requests

WASHINGTON (AP) ? National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, believed to be in legal limbo in the Moscow airport, is expanding his requests for asylum to another 19 countries, including China, according to WikiLeaks.

WikiLeaks, the anti-secrecy group that has adopted Snowden and his cause, on Monday night posted a statement said to be from Snowden that slammed President Barack Obama for "using citizenship as a weapon."

"Although I am convicted of nothing, it has unilaterally revoked my passport, leaving me a stateless person," Snowden says in the statement. "Without any judicial order, the administration now seeks to stop me exercising a basic right. A right that belongs to everybody. The right to seek asylum.

"Their purpose is to frighten, not me, but those who would come after me."

WikiLeaks legal adviser Sarah Harrison delivered the requests for asylum to an official at the Russian consulate at the Moscow airport on Sunday, according to the website. WikiLeaks says some of the requests have already been delivered to the appropriate embassies.

The WikiLeaks statement said requests were made to China, Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela, India and several European countries. Snowden had planned earlier to seek asylum in Ecuador and has requested asylum in Russia.

The asylum requests reported by WikiLeaks and the Snowden statement could not be independently authenticated.

Snowden, who has been on the run since releasing sensitive NSA documents, is believed to have been in Moscow airport's transit zone since his arrival from Hong Kong on June 23. The U.S. has annulled his passport, and Ecuador, where he had hoped to get asylum, has been giving mixed signals about offering him shelter.

After Snowden applied for political asylum to remain in Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters in Moscow that Snowden would have to stop leaking U.S. secrets if he wanted asylum there ? and he added that Snowden seemed unwilling to stop publishing leaks of classified material.

At the same time, Putin said he had no plans to turn over Snowden to the United States.

The expanded requests for asylum come as the Obama administration contends with European allies angry about the release of documents that alleged U.S. eavesdropping on European Union diplomats.

Obama, in an African news conference with Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, said the U.S. would provide allies with information about new reports that the NSA had bugged EU offices in Washington, New York and Brussels. But he also suggested such activity by governments would hardly be unusual.

"We should stipulate that every intelligence service ?not just ours, but every European intelligence service, every Asian intelligence service, wherever there's an intelligence service ? here's one thing that they're going to be doing: They're going to be trying to understand the world better, and what's going on in world capitals around the world," he said. "If that weren't the case, then there'd be no use for an intelligence service."

The latest issue concerns allegations, published in the German newsweekly Der Spiegel, of U.S. spying on European officials. French President Francois Hollande demanded Monday that the U.S. immediately stop any such eavesdropping and suggested the widening controversy could jeopardize next week's opening of trans-Atlantic trade talks between the United States and Europe.

"We cannot accept this kind of behavior from partners and allies," Hollande said on French television.

German government spokesman Steffen Seibert told reporters in Berlin, "Eavesdropping on friends is unacceptable." He declared, "We're not in the Cold War anymore."

Even before the latest disclosures, talks at the upcoming free-trade sessions were expected to be fragile, with disagreements surfacing over which items should be covered in or excluded from an agreement. The United States has said there should be no exceptions. But France has called for exempting certain cultural products, and other Europeans do not appear eager to give up longtime agricultural subsidies.

Obama said the Europeans "are some of the closest allies that we have in the world." But he added: "I guarantee you that in European capitals, there are people who are interested in, if not what I had for breakfast, at least what my talking points might be should I end up meeting with their leaders. That's how intelligence services operate."

Nonetheless, Obama said he'd told his advisers to "evaluate everything that's being claimed" and promised to share the results with allies.

Meanwhile, the Interfax news agency said a Russian consular official has confirmed that Snowden had asked for asylum in Russia.

Interfax cited Kim Shevchenko, the duty officer at the Russian Foreign Ministry's consular office in Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport, as saying that Snowden's representative, Harrison, handed over his request Sunday.

"If he wants to go somewhere and there are those who would take him, he is welcome to do so," Putin said. "If he wants to stay here, there is one condition: He must stop his activities aimed at inflicting damage on our American partners, no matter how strange it may sound coming from my lips."

Obama said "there have been high-level discussions with the Russians" about Snowden's situation.

"We don't have an extradition treaty with Russia. On the other hand, you know, Mr. Snowden, we understand, has traveled there without a valid passport, without legal papers. And you know we are hopeful that the Russian government makes decisions based on the normal procedures regarding international travel and the normal procedures regarding international travel and the normal interactions that law enforcement has. So I can confirm that."

Putin didn't mention any Snowden effort to seek asylum in Russia, and spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to say what the Russian response might be. Putin insisted that Snowden wasn't a Russian agent and that Russian security agencies hadn't contacted him.

Three U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to publicly discuss the Snowden case, said Washington's efforts were focused primarily on persuading Russia to deport Snowden either directly to the United States or to a third country, possibly in eastern Europe, that would then hand him over to U.S. authorities.

In a sign of the distrust generated by the Der Spiegel report, the German government said it had launched a review of its secure government communications network and the EU's executive, the European Commission, ordered "a comprehensive ad hoc security sweep."

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday he didn't know the details of the allegations, but he still played them down, maintaining that many nations undertake various activities to protect their national interests. Kerry failed to quell the outrage from allies, including France, Germany and Italy.

A spokesman for Herman Van Rompuy, the president of the European Council, said, "The European Union has demanded and expects full and urgent clarification by the U.S. regarding the allegations."

According to Der Spiegel's report, which it said was partly based on information leaked by Snowden, NSA planted bugs in the EU's diplomatic offices in Washington and infiltrated the building's computer network. Similar measures were taken at the EU's mission to the United Nations in New York, the magazine said.

It also reported that the NSA used secure facilities at NATO headquarters in Brussels to dial into telephone maintenance systems that would have allowed it to intercept senior officials' calls and Internet traffic at a key EU office nearby.

As for Snowden, White House national security spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said the White House won't comment on specific asylum requests but reiterated its message to all countries that he "needs to be expelled back to the U.S. based on the fact that he doesn't have travel documents and the charges pending against him."

Regarding possible effects on U.S. interactions with Russia, she said it remains the case "that we don't want this issue to negatively impact the bilateral relationship."

South Africa's inequality blights Mandela's dream of 'Rainbow Nation'

Reuters file

The wristwatch of a man is seen as he holds a glass of wine in his hand in Johannesburg.

By Ron Allen, Correspondent, NBC News

JOHANNESBURG ? As South Africa prays for ailing anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela and welcomes the first African-American U.S. president, it is still struggling to become the country that Mandela dreamed it would be.

Progress has been made in the 19 years since Mandela was elected president, but it is still a nation divided by haves and have-nots.

One major change is that the ?haves? now include so-called? ?Black Diamonds? - a new class of wealthy, successful South Africans who are not white.

Sandton is perhaps Johannesburg?s most affluent neighborhood. It?s also where you?ll find one of the city?s hottest restaurants, ?Signatures,? known for its fine dining and upscale clientele.?

There?s nothing unusual about that. South Africa has long been a place with stunning wealth and the good life.

What?s striking here, is that the owner of ?Signatures,? Desmond Mabuza, is black. He was born and raised in Soweto, the iconic township at the center of protests during the battle over apartheid and where poverty is still endemic.

Mabuza bursts with energy and charm as he greets guests, then goes back in the kitchen to supervise the chefs and waiters.

?Yeah, I?ve certainly broken the mold,? Mabuza said in an interview as servers buzzed around the table. ?I just happen to be doing it because I enjoy it, not to make history or break barriers.?

Chip Somodevilla / Getty Images

Built in a haphazard swath, shacks stretch on to the horizon in Alexandra Township on June 26, in Johannesburg, South Africa. Alexandra is situated next to the wealthy suburb of Sandton, laying bare post-apartheid South Africa's vast gulf between wealth and poverty.

He attributed his success to hard work, learning the business from bottom to top, and a big break right after high school, when he went to Marquette University in Wisconsin.

?The likes of Mandela have obviously laid the foundation. It?s up to us, the younger generation ... to come back and bring in the expertise required to take this country to the next level,? he said.

But Mabuza and the so-called ?Black Diamonds? - a term which is not always seen as a compliment - are exceptions.

Life has been very different for the overwhelming majority of black South Africans since the end of apartheid and the birth of Mandela?s ?Rainbow Nation,? with its promise of equal opportunity for all.

The unemployment rate is 25 percent on average, but it is closer to 50 percent among young black workers, according to a recent study. And whites, just 10 percent of the population of 48 million people, earn on average six times as much as blacks.

?The one singular failure, probably the Achilles? heel of the South African transition, is the nature of inequality,? said Adam Habib, Vice Chancellor at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.

South Africa, the most powerful economy on the African continent, has one of the greatest divides between haves and have-nots anywhere in the world.

It has the second highest?degree of inequality?in family income distribution in the world, only topped by Lesotho, a tiny kingdom within South Africa, according to the CIA?s World Factbook. ??

?The vast majority of people who are poor are still black,? Habib said.

And what?s more, there?s now a huge divide within the black population. At the top are those ?Black Diamonds,? men like Patrice Motsepe, a billionaire who made his fortune in mining, and in the news recently after vowing to donate half his money to charity. ?

Others include top government officials like Tokyo Sexwale and Cyril Ramaphosa, with wealth estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

They and others who have made it big are often the target of resentment here, because in many cases their wealth and success are largely seen as the result of government contracts, and preferences given to black businesses through a very aggressive affirmative action program called ?Black Economic Empowerment.?

As economist Mike Schussler explained, ?a lot of people feel those jobs are given to friends and family and people with political connections rather than on ability.?

While there?s favoritism everywhere, Schussler and other analysts insist it?s rampant in South Africa. And it doesn?t help that the government of President Jacob Zuma is widely viewed as a corrupt and ineffective steward of the economy.

At the bottom are folks like Dennis Martinez. He and his family live in what?s basically a tin-roofed shack in Soweto, where they burn an open fire to cook and keep warm against the evening chill. ?We haven?t got lights, we stay in shacks, if it?s raining then all the rain comes through,? he said.

View images of civil rights leader Nelson Mandela, who went from anti-apartheid activist to prisoner to South Africa's first black president.

Martinez said nothing much has changed in the nine years he?s lived there.

Asked if life was getting better, he said, ?No, it is not, because we haven?t got jobs and we have to struggle.?

However, even amid the poverty there is optimism and hope. Martinez?s daughter Danielle, 9, and wearing a somewhat tattered dress, declared ?I want to be a president? when asked about her ambitions for the future.

?I want to help poor people. I want to give them money, food and presents,? she said.

While South Africa?s government claims correctly that a vast number of people now have better housing and basic services than during the apartheid era, few would dispute there is still a long way to go to get to where Mandela hoped his nation would be.

Protests target Confederation Cup match in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? More than 5,000 anti-government protesters marched Sunday near the Maracana stadium before a major international soccer match, venting their anger about the billions of dollars the Brazilian government is spending on major sporting events rather than public services.

Sharp clashes broke out several hundred yards (meters) away from the stadium about 30 minutes before the game began, as a minor scuffle between police and a few protesters escalated.

Officers quickly quashed the unrest, unleashing a barrage of tear gas canisters and stun grenades, scattering the crowd, but not before some protesters retaliated with Molotov cocktails and powerful fireworks. At one point, an officer ran into a nearby gas station and told several people holed up inside they needed to get out or they were "all going to die here!"

Though smaller in size, the march was the latest in a wave of protests that has spread across this continent-sized country in recent weeks. Many are calling the protest movement the biggest seen here in decades, with more than 1 million people having taken to the streets nationwide on just the night of June 20.

The demonstrations have dwindled in size and frequency in recent days as officials from all levels of government have scrambled to calm public anger with woeful public services and a heavy tax burden.

Still, the atmosphere was tense outside Maracana on Sunday. Some clusters of protesters tried to break through the security perimeter police set-up around the stadium, but were pushed back and not able to get past authorities.

Despite the smaller protests, demonstrator Eliane Milazzo, a 54-year-old high school teacher marching with her daughter and son-in-law, said the Brazilian people won't let their leaders off the hook and that the protests will go on.

"They've got to continue because the reasons people are out on the street are not going to go away overnight," she said. "I know I will continue to go to the streets and so will my family until we see real changes in our everyday lives."

President Dilma Rousseff has suffered the brunt of the political damage. The first national poll conducted after the protests ignited showed a steep drop in her approval rating and throws in doubt what had seemed an easy re-election next year.

Rousseff decided to not attend Sunday's final match of the Confederations Cup football tournament, which pits Brazil against Spain in what's seen as a warm-up for next year's World Cup to be hosted in Brazil.

Other top government officials and even football legend Pele are also skipping the match in a major embarrassment for a government that had hoped to use the World Cup and the 2016 Olympics in Rio to showcase Brazil's arrival as a global power.

"People are angry with Congress, angry with the terrible hospitals and worse schools," said Tania Nobrega, a 56-year-old psychologist protesting near Maracana in Rio. "But they don't want Dilma's head. People are sick of the status quo here, and that means they're fed up not only with the (ruling Workers Party) but also with all parties."

The demonstrations began earlier this month over a 10-cent hike in bus and subway fare in Sao Paulo before morphing into a nationwide movement denouncing a range of problems such as government corruption, poor education and health care.

The sudden outrage has bewildered the country's political class, which took several days to find their footing and respond to the demonstrations, both with words and action.

Several city and state governments reversed the hike on public transportation fares that sparked the first protests, but the demonstrators had moved well beyond that issue.

On June 21, Rousseff delivered a prerecorded prime time speech on TV that did little to calm the protests. She then convened a June 24 meeting with protest leaders and all the governors and mayors of capital cities, in which she announced $23 billion in new transportation investments. She also said she would import foreign doctors to work in underserved areas while promising a five-point plan to focus on public services and corruption.

The president is expected to deliver to Congress early this week her proposal for a national plebiscite letting citizens vote on political reforms.

The protests have mostly died down since the proposals were made.

The Estado de S. Paulo newspaper reported Sunday that 490 protests had taken place in Brazil in the last three weeks, peaking at 150 on June 20, when violent clashes between protesters and police were seen in several cities.

Many demonstrators have said they had learned their mass actions could prompt a quick government response. They also said they anticipated other high-profile events they could use to speak out, including July's visit by Pope Francis, next year's World Cup, a presidential election a few months later and the Rio Olympics three years from now.

"I don't think the demonstrations will stop people from coming to the World Cup, but I hope they don't come," said Tatiana Poggi, a history professor at Sunday's protest near Maracana. "It's a way foreigners help us protest. Boycott the big event."

Brazilian officials were doing all they could to make sure Sunday's protests didn't interrupt the finals match, which would be watched by millions around the world.

Officials were mobilizing the biggest security operation yet seen for a football game in Brazil, with about 6,000 regular police and almost 500 police investigators patrolling the area around Maracana and a large contingent of elite federal troops also on patrol.

No clashes between protesters and police were reported a few hours before the match was set to begin, but demonstrators remained fierce in their anti-government chants.

"Here in Brazil we took too long to wake up to discover they spent billions on stadiums, but they say there's no money for hospitals, no supplies for doctors," said protester Mariela Simao. "They tried to take action to show the population they are doing something, but they could do more."

garey earp: INDIA POST PARIWAR: Top Internet Security Programs

Nowadays, almost everyone has a PC at home and internet connection has become a need of people of all ages. Though reliable anti-virus or anti-spyware software is installed, it is inevitable that we still have threats to the computer. In today?s computer world, internet security does not allow the information to be accessed or compromised by other individuals. The initial way to secure information is encryption and maintaining passwords.
A password should be confidential and not be revealed to other person.?Internet Security?can be achieved through following steps. Internet service provider should be from a genuine source. If there is availability, try to choose an internet service provider that offers online virus, spam and content filters. All these will secure the internet service from not allowing the infection to enter the computers. A variety of software like stop spam, filter content for kids, manage cookies, pop-up and pop-under ads and trip up phishing is available to clean the browser. Routers provide the security from internet by using network address translation technique. Routers are of low cost and complexity and provide the same service as that of a conventional internet service. Protection for computers is necessary because there are more than one million malwares that are estimated to be discovered in 2010 alone. Any one is exposed to malware attacks.?Anti-Viruis programs ase essential?on every computer.

They provide essential safety to people to surf and navigate the web pages. Anti-virus programmes are designed to scan for and remove the harmful components when they are found on computers. They search and trash the viruses, worms, Trojans, bots and many more.?Anti-virus?programs keep a machine free from virus. A level of protection is provided against identity theft when the machine is provided with anti-virus and internet security programs. They ensure to keep the higher speed levels. Even though the machines are provided with anti-virus programmes, they can?t protect it from spyware. Spyware is the software that runs on the computer without the permission of its user. It cannot be healed by anti-virus because, it does not spoil the system, but it tracks the personal information from the user?s machine and sends this data back to the software manufacturer over the internet. Adware is the software for advertising and it runs random or targeted pop-up advertisements. With these pop-ups the machine will be caught with spyware and it also affects the system speed by reducing it. The spyware track the personal information like passwords and may damage the business solutions if the system is using for business. So it is very important to have a good anti-spyware to ensure the privacy. Firewall controls the access between two computers and restricts unfettered access. Firewalls monitor network traffic and also able to block any dangerous traffic. There are two types of firewalls-software firewall and hardware firewall. Firewall functions as the intermediate server between SMTP and HTTP connections. Firewall keeps out malicious hackers and people who aspire to damage and takeover other?s servers. Hence, having a good firewall eliminates the risks with computer and internet and keeps out the malevolent people. When all these programs are used in combination it helps protect the computer and internet connection.

NYC's Met doing away with metal admission button

NEW YORK (AP) ? Tiny metal buttons in delicious-sounding colors like poupon, hubba bubba and piglet have served as The Metropolitan Museum of Art's admission ticket for 42 years. But starting Monday, the 1-inch disks will be replaced by a paper ticket with detachable sticker.

It's all about the money ? the buttons have become too expensive to produce.

"The cost has been increasing exponentially over the years," said Harold Holzer, the museum's spokesman. "It's gone up tens of thousands of dollars in the last five years."

When the museum first started using the buttons, it had about 1 million visitors annually. Today it has 6 million.

"It seems impractical to tie ourselves to an archaic, quaint ? even if it's well liked ? system," he added.

The buttons are making their exit on the same day that the Met is switching to a seven-day-a-week schedule. The museum ? which has a recommended admission of $25 for adults, meaning visitors may pay what they wish ? had been closed Mondays.

"The message is not changing, the medium is changing," Holzer said.

In 1997, a student at Parson School of Design created a dress with the buttons for a project using recycled objects. It features three of the 16 colors the buttons came in. The piece was donated to the museum and is in storage.

Like the buttons, the paper tickets will eventually come in an assortment of colors. The first will be el mar blue. They also will contain a date (something the buttons lacked) and be emblazoned with the same "M'' design used on the buttons, adapted from a 16th-century illustration based on a Leonardo Da Vinci drawing.

"With just a flip of a computer switch," the paper tickets will allow the museum to issue timed-entry tickets for such special shows as the wildly popular Alexander McQueen costume exhibition in 2011, Holzer said.

"It gives us a great deal of agility," he said. "Agility beats nostalgia every time."

Asked if the button might become an art object worthy of museum display, Holzer quipped: "It's been displayed about a hundred million times if you count all the visitors who've worn it. It's maybe time for a rest."

Bombs hit Iraq funeral and football stadium, killing 22

RAMADI, Iraq (Reuters) - A series of bombs near a bakery, at a funeral, inside a senior police officer's car and at a football stadium killed at least 22 people across Iraq on Friday, police and medics said.

The violence is part of a trend of increasing militant attacks since the start of the year, which claimed more than 1,000 lives in May alone, making it the deadliest month since the sectarian bloodletting of 2006-07.

Twin blasts at a neighborhood football stadium killed five players in Madaen, about 30 km (20 miles) southeast of Baghdad, and a roadside bomb near a bakery shop in the west of the capital left three people dead, police said.

A senior Iraqi police officer was killed when a bomb exploded inside his car and a second blast came five minutes later as police and bystanders gathered near the wreckage of the vehicle in the city of Ramadi in Anbar province.

Ten people died in those blasts.

"We were on duty at a nearby checkpoint when the car exploded. We ran to work out what was going on, but before we reached the car it exploded again," said a policeman at the scene. "Many civilians and policemen were killed."

A suicide bomber attacked a funeral in the mainly Shi'ite city of Dujail, killing at least four others, police and medics said.

Concerns that Iraq may lapse back into full-scale sectarian conflict have mounted in recent months amid tensions fuelled by the civil war in neighboring Syria, where mainly Sunni rebels are fighting to overthrow a leader backed by Shi'ite Iran.

Sunni insurgents often target members of the security forces, heads of tribes and officials they see as supporters of the Shi'ite-led government, as well as Shi'ites.

Minority Sunnis have felt sidelined since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion toppled Saddam Hussein and empowered majority Shi'ites.

At the height of Iraq's insurgency in 2006-07, Anbar was in the grip of al Qaeda's local affiliate, the Islamic State of Iraq, which has been regaining strength in recent months.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for Friday's attacks. Suicide bombings are a trademark of al Qaeda's Iraqi wing.

The attacks followed bomb blasts in coffee shops and other targets that killed at least 22 on Thursday.

Facebook to pull ads from pages with sex, violence

By Alexei Oreskovic

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc said it will no longer allow ads to appear on pages with sexual or violent content, as the online social network moves to appease marketers being associated with objectionable material.

The moves come a month after several businesses pulled their ads from Facebook amid reports of pages on Facebook that promoted violence against women.

Facebook said at the time that it needed to improve its system for flagging and removing content that violated its community standards, which forbid users from posting content about hate-speech, threats and pornography, among other things.

Ads account for roughly 85 percent of revenue at Facebook, the world's largest social network with 1.1 billion users. Facebook said the changes would not have a meaningful impact on its business.

On Friday, Facebook said it also needed to do more to prevent situations in which ads are displayed alongside material that may not run afoul of its community standards but are deemed controversial nonetheless.

A Facebook page for a business that sells adult products, for example, will no longer feature ads. Previously such a page could feature ads along the right-hand side of the page so long as the page did not violate Facebook's prohibition on depicting nudity.

The move underscores the delicate balance for social media companies, which features a variety of unpredictable and sometimes unsavory content shared by users, but which rely on advertising to underpin their business.

"Our goal is to both preserve the freedoms of sharing on Facebook but also protect people and brands from certain types of content," Facebook said in a post on its website on Friday.

Facebook said on Friday that it would expand the scope of pages and groups on its website that should be ad-restricted and promised to remove ads from the flagged areas of the website by the end of the coming week.

Pages and groups that reference violence will also be off limits to ads, the company said. A Facebook spokeswoman noted that the policy would not apply to the pages of news organizations on Facebook.

Facebook said the process of flagging objectionable pages and removing ads would initially be done manually, but that the company will build an automated system to do the job in the coming weeks.
