Apple could be preparing Bluetooth keyboard support for the next Apple TV iOS update

Apple set to include Bluetooth keyboard support in the next Apple TV iOS update

Apple may be planning on offering support for Bluetooth keyboards when the next software update arrives for the Apple TV. When iOS 6.1 beta 3 was released, it enabled Bluetooth support on the Apple TV. 9to5 Mac decided to try pairing Bluetooth keyboards with the device, and it worked with both Apple's own Bluetooth keyboard, and a third-party keyboard.

Once connected, you can use a wireless keyboard to completely control the Apple TV without using the included remote. The arrow keys function for navigation, the Return key is the play/pause, and the Escape key maps to ?menu? or up ?one level? functionality. More importantly, searching for content becomes a thousand times easier when you can enter search terms with a hard keyboard.

It's important to remember that what is tested in beta sometimes stays in beta, so just because the Bluetooth keyboard support works now doesn't mean Apple will include it in the final iOS 6.1 release.

However, adding this type of Bluetooth support for the Apple TV makes a lot of sense. Controlling the Apple TV with the hardware remote now is constrained to infrared line-of-sight, and offers really poor text entry support for searches. Bluetooth will work from anywhere, at any angle, in range, and a physical keyboard makes text entry much easier.

Perhaps we could also see the door open for third-party manufacturers to start offering their own remote controllers for the Apple TV. We could start to see some innovation like we already do from the likes of Logitech who offer sophisticated remote controllers with inbuilt keyboards for other bits of A/V kit.

Apple could use the additional Bluetooth functionality, for example, for a remote controller with an in-built microphone for a Siri controlled Apple TV maybe. The Remote app for iOS could perhaps also ditch Wi-Fi for a low-power, faster-to-connect Bluetooth 4.0 version.

Hopefully we'll find out more soon.

Tortoiseshell - Louise - Medium - Adult - Female - Cat

Louise and her sister Thelma were given up by their owner of many years because she was moving. They are very somewhat shy but lovable cats and should be adopted together because they have been together so long. The trained eye can tell the difference between them, but it is very slight. They do not understand what has happened to them, but they have adjusted quite well. If you are interested in adopting these two beauties, contact Bob or Wendy at (562) 596-3153 or e-mail at [email removed]. Our usual adoption fee is $115.00, but if you are willing to take both of these wonderful orphans, we will charge a much lower fee of $120.00 total.

Texas A&M freshman quarterback Manziel makes Heisman history

NEW YORK (AP) -- Johnny Football just got himself a way cooler nickname: Johnny Heisman.

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy, taking college football's top individual prize Saturday night after a record-breaking debut.

Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o finished a distant second and Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein was third in the voting. In a Heisman race with two nontraditional candidates, Manziel broke through the class barrier and kept Te'o from becoming the first purely defensive player to win the award.

Manziel drew 474 first-place votes and 2,029 points from the panel of media members and former winners.

''I have been dreaming about this since I was a kid, running around the backyard pretending I was Doug Flutie, throwing Hail Marys to my dad,'' he said after hugging his parents and kid sister.

Manziel seemed incredibly calm after his name was announced, hardly resembling the guy who dashes around the football field on Saturday. He simply bowed his head, and later gave the trophy a quick kiss.

''I wish my whole team could be up here with me,'' he said with a wide smile.

Te'o had 321 first-place votes and 1,706 points and Klein received 60 firsts and 894 points.

Just a few days after turning 20, Manziel proved times have truly changed in college football, and that experience can be really overrated.

For years, seniors dominated the award named after John Heisman, the pioneering Georgia Tech coach from the early 1900s. In the 1980s, juniors started becoming common winners. Tim Tebow became the first sophomore to win it in 2007, and two more won it in the next two seasons.

Adrian Peterson had come closest as a freshman, finishing second to Southern California quarterback Matt Leinart in 2004. But it took 78 years for a newbie to take home the big bronze statue. Johnny Football really can do it all.

Peterson was a true freshman for Oklahoma. As a redshirt freshmen, Manziel attended school and practiced with the team last year, but did not play in any games.

He's the second player from Texas A&M to win the Heisman, joining John David Crow from 1957, and did so without the slightest hint of preseason hype. Manziel didn't even win the starting job until two weeks before the season.

Who needs hype when you can fill-up a highlight reel the way Manziel can?

With daring dashes and elusive improvisation, Manziel broke 2010 Heisman winner Cam Netwon's Southeastern Conference record with 4,600 total yards, led the Aggies to a 10-2 in their first season in the SEC and orchestrated an upset at then-No. 1 Alabama in November that stamped him as legit.

He has thrown for 3,419 yards and 24 touchdowns and run for 1,181 yards and 19 more scores to become the first freshman, first SEC player and fifth player overall to throw for 3,000 yards and run for 1,000 in a season.

Manziel has one more game this season, when the No. 10 Aggies play Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 4.

The resume alone fails to capture the Johnny Football phenomena. At 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, Manziel is master of the unexpected, darting here and there, turning plays seemingly doomed to failure into touchdowns.

Take, for example, what he did in the first quarter against the Crimson Tide. Manziel took a shotgun snap, stepped up in the pocket as if he was about to take off on another made scramble and ran into the back a lineman. On impact, Manziel bobbled the ball, caught it with his back to the line of scrimmage, turned, rolled the opposite direction and fired a touchdown pass - throwing across his body - to a wide-open receiver.

He might as well have been back in Kerrville, Texas, where he became a hill country star in high school.

Manziel thought he was going to be the next Derek Jeter - hence the No. 2 he wears. Instead he became the biggest star football star in College Station since Crow won the Heisman.

His road to stardom was anything but a clear path.

Manziel competed with two other quarterbacks to replace Ryan Tannehill as the starter this season, the Aggies' first in the SEC and first under coach Kevin Sumlin.

Manziel came out of spring practice as the backup, and went to work with a private quarterback coach in the summer to better his chances of winning the job in the preseason.

It worked, but still nobody was hailing Manziel is the next big thing.

Then he started playing and the numbers started piling up.

He had 557 total yards against Arkansas, 576 vs. Louisiana Tech and 440 against Mississippi State.

He also had some struggles against Florida in the season opener and in a home loss to LSU. The question was: Could Johnny Football do his thing against a top-notch opponent?

The answer came in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Nov. 10. Going into the matchup against the Crimson Tide, Manziel said he and his teammates heard a lot of doubters.

''You can't do this and you can't do that,'' he recalled Saturday at the podium

Manziel passed for 253 yards, ran for 92 and the Aggies beat the Tide 29-24. Klein had been the front-runner for most of the season, but Manziel surged after beating 'Bama.

Still, Manziel was still something of a mystery man. Sumlin's rules prohibit freshmen from being available to the media. Johnny Football was off-limits, but not exactly silent.

Manziel gave glimpses of himself on social media - including some memorable pictures of him dressed up as Scooby-Doo for Halloween with some scantily clad young women.

Before he became a celebrity, Manziel got himself into some serious trouble. In June, he was arrested in College Station after police said he was involved in a fight and produced a fake ID. He was charged with disorderly conduct and two other misdemeanors.

After the season, Texas A&M took the reins off Manziel and made him available for interviews, allowing Johnny Football to tell his own story.

Though in the end, his play said it all, and he made Heisman history.

UTECH's Shameful State of Nature ? Veritas

We?re often surprised when we hear reports of mob killings in rural Jamaica. Those of us in the urban centres of the island usually express outrage at the ?uncivilised? and ?barbaric? tendencies of our more simple countrymen; but make no mistake, for all our urbanisation and university education, we are no different from those who set upon their own and hack them to death. The students of The University of Technology (UTECH) proved that much last Thursday. How many more must be beaten before we realise something is very wrong in Jamaica?

Reports indicate that a mob comprised of students of UTECH, one of Jamaica?s premier academic centres, chased a young man who was rumoured to have been caught in a compromising position with another male student with one thing in mind, ??kill di battybwoi? (as heard on tape). The student reportedly sought refuge from the mob in a security post, but found himself being beaten by the security personnel stationed there. I wish to condemn in the strongest possible terms the irresponsible and unprofessional conduct of the security guards and commend Marksman Limited for firing these men who disgraced the security agency with their shameful, unlawful and scandalous display of prejudice and unwarranted violence.

A friend of mine remarked that security guards are ?hardly educated? and we ?shouldn?t expect better from them?, but say we accept that line of argument, what about the tertiary level students? Surely they are educated. These are supposed to be the privileged 4% or 5% of our population that acquires tertiary education, the future intellectual leaders of our nation. It is a worrying development that those who are supposed to know better cannot do better. I?ve always thought education should change people for the better, so has our system failed? Or are our people so backward that education can do nothing to quell the general contempt for order and civility which is so pervasive in Jamaica? Maybe it?s time to look beyond the perception that only rural Jamaicans are brutish and coarse, and accept the fact that it is a nationwide problem. If those who are educated and ?civilised? can act so brutish and backward, why should we expect jungle justice to stop?

Make no mistake, people have a legitimate right to be opposed to homosexual conduct, however that opposition must remain in the generally accepted standards of decency, rule of law and social order ? neither of which encourages or promotes mob violence. That is not a modern society, that is a state of nature. ?People are entitled to a private life, sexuality is a private matter and it should be left alone. While some may argue that the university is a public space, the alleged indiscretion by these two students does not justify violence. This is a prime chance for anti-homosexual sympathizers who make the ridiculous claim that Jamaica is not a homophobic nation, just a christian one, to face up to the truth. If what transpired at UTECH last Thursday was ?christian?, then I am prepared to declare myself pagan. Surely that kind of violence is not of God.

The assault of that student is part of a larger picture of a break down of the rule of law and order in this country. I ask the question ?how many more must be beaten?? not only in reference to the pervasive violence against homosexuals, but the general tendency to take the law into our own hands in this country. Far too many people lose their lives simply because there is an allegation made against them. This has got to stop. The Government of Jamaica must recognise these acts represent a loss of legitimacy as far as security and justice are concerned, the next step is a complete break down of civility and order. The citizenry clearly has no confidence that the rule of law and justice will be applied either fairly or in the best interest of all affected. ?Jamaica is a state out of control and these acts, whether it be the killing of a pregnant woman, the mobbing of an alleged rapist or homosexual, the raping of children ? they all fall into the larger picture of a break down of law and order and decency, something is very wrong with Jamaica?s society.

As a university community, UTECH should be ashamed of the behaviour which unfolded last week. The university?s reputation has invariably been affected on the international scene. Prospective international students are surely cringing at the uncivilised display which unfolded on tape for all the world to see, thanks to YouTube. The university?s administration must do all it can to find those responsible and apply the appropriate sanctions. If we don?t begin to address the mob mentality in Jamaica, I fear UTech?s state of nature may soon become a reality for every single Jamaican, rural or urban.
