In his opening remarks, Mr. Putin praised RT, which he said had been created to "end the monopoly of Anglo-Saxon media" in the world. There appears little doubt that Putin believes the network really does reach over 630-million people in over 100 countries ??as it claims to do?? and that such exclusive chats with the Russian president will help further boost its reach.?
Over an almost two hour chat, with most of RT's top staff seated around a long table, he went on to paint the Kremlin's alternative view of global affairs, in which a beleaguered Russia wages a lonely battle for principle and common sense against a cynical and hypocritical West.
Among other things, he chided the US over the current National Security Agency scandal, apparently under the impression that the key controversy is about the letter of the law rather than the extent and scope of state secrecy. "If this [surveillance] is made within the framework of the law, by which the special services? rules of conduct are guided, this is normal. If this is made illegally, it's bad," he said.
He reiterated a suggestion made by his press secretary that Russia might be open to granting asylum?to NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.
Putin spent a good deal of time on the US, which he reminded RT viewers was founded on the "ethnic cleansing" of its native population, and used the atomic bomb on Japanese civilians at the end of WWII ??something he averred Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin would never do. "[Stalin] was a dictator and a tyrant, but I very much doubt that in the spring of 1945, if he had been in possession of an atomic bomb, he would have used it against Germany," Putin said.
He was asked one single question about domestic Russian politics, by RT's American talk show host Peter Lavelle. "Opinion polls show that the opposition in Russia is very small. What kind of opposition would you like to see?" was Mr. Lavelle's query.
Putin replied that opposition is fine, as long as it acts within the law. When protesters break the law, they should be answerable under the legal system. "This is what's happening both in the United States and Russia. But when we do that [put protesters on trial] we are criticized, but when the United States does this, it is considered as a norm. These are the so-called double standards," he said.
Moreover, "[Russia?s] diplomatic service doesn?t cooperate actively with the Occupy Wall Street activists, yet your diplomatic service actively cooperates [with Russia?s opposition] and supports them," Putin added.
Putin might have been defining the current mission of RT, which was started ??along with quite a few other media and PR platforms???8 years ago and tasked with improving Russia's image in the world through journalism that showed the country through the eyes of its own people. According to Russian media, the Kremlin funds RT to the tune of about $300-million annually, and Putin last year personally forbade the government to slash its funding.
The network's focus has migrated, especially since Putin returned to power last year amid widespread disapproval around the world. Now RT runs wall-to-wall coverage of protest rallies everywhere except in Russia, invites commentary from critics of almost every government except Russia's, and produces talk shows that slam Wall Street, attack US imperialism, and find the decline of the West lurking in almost every daily headline.
RT now maintains a full time cable station in the US, RT-America, which broadcasts mostly US-generated content around the clock. Last year, RT signed WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to do a series of in-depth interview programs?that explored the corruptions of power and the rise of authoritarianism (in the West). Last month it did a deal with retired TV legend Larry King, that apparently involves RT picking up Mr. King's existing online talk show and also produce an all-new political talk show specially for RT. King subsequently appeared to deny that?but RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan insists that King is contracted to do the show.
The network's programming, along with its relentless Kremlin-inspired focus, is all perfectly fair commentary, of course. Indeed, RT seems deliberately designed to survey the West in the same arbitrary and hectoring tone that the Kremlin feels Western ??particularly US ??journalists cover Russia.?
A recent satirical article?in the Global Post, which garnered massive attention, aimed to show how US journalists would cover the NSA revelations if it were a foreign country: "Inside the United States," is the headline. "GlobalPost goes inside the United States to uncover the regime?s dramatic descent into authoritarian rule and how the opposition plans to fight back."
Anyone who finds that thought provoking ??and they should ??is welcome to tune in to RT. It's the real deal.

And toward that goal, the new-old offensive coaching staff is trying to streamline things.
With Rob Chudzinski gone to Cleveland, new coordinator Mike Shula and quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey have kept many of the principles of the system, but tried to adapt the way Newton?s calling plays to make him more comfortable.

Newton said, via Jonathan Jones of the Charlotte Observer, comparing play calls from last year and this year. ?It comes out your mouth faster. You get in the huddle, it?s the same exact play. Everyone knows that.
?It?s not tricking ourselves. We don?t want to trick ourselves, we want to trick the defense. It?s not saying a whole novel, it?s not saying a riddle either. It?s calling a play, executing it and performing.?
A quarterback has to convey a lot of information to teammates in a short amount of time, setting the play, the formation it?s run from, pass routes and protections.
And the old mouthful of play call is reminiscent of Jon Gruden putting Newton on the spot with a bunch of coaching jargon during a pre-draft television show.
Frankly, trying to make a player recite the Pledge of Allegiance just to run a football play smacks more of coaching ego than superior intellect.
Newton seemed able to run successful plays in college by numbers, and if they?re being run properly, whether they?re called 36, Al or Operation Overlord shouldn?t matter.
Unfortunately for too many players, too many coaches feel like their plans are so detailed, smart and important that to call them by anything other than the ingredient list on a can of Spam demeans their brilliant work.
The Panthers seem willing to set that hubris aside, and let Newton call the play in a way he feels comfortable communicating.

Fidji Simo, Facebook?s product manager for ads, said that Facebook is uniquely positioned to get marketers? messages in front of the people who care about it. The company wants to make it easier for companies big and small to do that, so it is removing some of the barriers to entry.
When an advertiser wants to create a Facebook ad, Facebook will give them options for objectives. Since it?s hard for many marketers to immediately know the difference between a like ad and a sponsored story, Facebook wants to give advertisers a simple question ? ?What do you want to do?? Users can then select their objective, whether it?s to drive page likes, to gain more views for a video, to get more installs for their application or get more foot traffic.
There?s no set date for these changes, but Facebook told reporters Thursday that it should be in a couple weeks.
While a company previously may have used two or three types of ads to reach a goal, now Facebook wants to combine these methods and make it simpler.
This may not make a dent for companies who are used to advertising through Facebook, but it can be a godsend for small businesses and those who are just getting their foot in the door for Facebook advertising. This could be a way for Facebook to find newer advertisers by cutting back the complexity and putting the goal at the forefront.
Many small businesses may have been scared away by Facebook?s advertising options in the past, and this would be a way for Facebook to wean those kinds of marketers from simply clicking ?boost post,? to becoming more intimate with Power Editor and Facebook?s deeper advertising options.
Dennis Yu, the CEO of BlitzMetrics and a Facebook ads expert, emailed Inside Facebook about why these changes to the advertising flow are a positive move:
Facebook?s move to simplify the ad buying process is great for small business and those with simple goals. It?s not going to affect big brands and direct marketers, who need and use all the targeting and placement options available.But rather than focus on the ad buying process, Facebook will be able to really drive ROI (return on investment) for brands and e-commerce players by improving and automating how they create lookalike audiences and bid to conversions. Guys like us can certainly select thousands of interest and demo targets to find what converts at what price. But Facebook has the data to do it with further optimizations to optimized CPM on action specs and custom audience enhancements.
We fully believe Facebook will be successful here. Expect that the current batch of 3rd party Facebook ad software providers will feel some heartache, as customers will wonder why Facebook?s native product is better than theirs. Agencies will increasingly be taking a role in ad buying, especially in the mid-range market. So expect them to be more effective in using Facebook?s own tools, as opposed to 3rd party tools.
Facebook Strategic Preferred Marketing Developer SocialCode also thinks this is a good move for the site and those who advertise. CEO?Laura O?Shaughnessy issued a statement about the new developments:

NEW YORK (AP) ? Anthony Weiner's run for a renaissance is officially on.
The ex-congressman whose career imploded in a rash of raunchy tweets two years ago said in a YouTube video announcement late Tuesday that he's in the New York City mayoral race. He'd said last month he was considering it.
"I made some big mistakes and I know I let a lot of people down, but I also learned some tough lessons," he said in the video. "I'm running for mayor because I've been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it my entire life. And I hope I get a second chance."
With that, Weiner is embarking on an audacious comeback quest, hoping to go from punch line pol whose tweeted crotch shot was emblazoned on the nation's consciousness to leader of America's biggest city.
The video appeared late Tuesday but was not linked on his website or YouTube page. A call to Weiner was not immediately returned Wednesday.
The Democrat is jumping into a crowded field for September's primary. He's arriving with some significant advantages, including a $4.8 million campaign war chest, the possibility of more than $1 million more in public matching money, polls showing him ahead of all but one other Democrat ? and no end of name recognition.
His participation makes a runoff more likely, and many political observers feel he could at least get to the second round.
But Weiner also has continued to contend with questions about his character and the scandal that sank his career just two years ago.
After a photo of a man's bulging, underwear-clad groin appeared on his Twitter account in 2011, he initially claimed his account had been hacked. After more photos emerged ? including one of him bare-chested in his congressional office ? the married congressman eventually owned up to exchanging racy messages with several women, saying he'd never met any of them. He soon resigned.
In recent interviews, he has said he shouldn't have lied but did it because he wanted to keep the truth from his then-pregnant wife, Huma Abedin, a longtime aide to former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. She told The New York Times Magazine that she has forgiven him.
Weiner has taken a series of steps recently to rehab his image and reintroduce himself, including the lengthy magazine profile and a series of local TV interviews. He hasn't responded to interview requests from The Associated Press.
He also has released a platform of sorts, a list of ideas styled as a blueprint for helping the city's middle class thrive. He's made a point of highlighting one or more of the concepts on most days, via his newly revived Twitter presence.
The suggestions, some of them updates from a mayoral run he nearly made in 2009, range from giving every public school student a Kindle reader to using Medicaid money to create a city-run, single-payer health system for the uninsured.
Some seem to draw on his Washington experience, such as making more use of a federal cigarette-smuggling law. But others fall squarely within City Hall, including suggestions to create a "nonprofit czar" in city government and eliminate paid positions for parent coordinators in schools.
The document also opens a window on a vision of the city ? a place with "a can-do attitude, competitive spirit and aggressive nature" ? that sounds not unlike Weiner himself. He was known during his seven terms in Washington as a vigorous defender of Democratic viewpoints, unafraid to get combative whether it was on cable TV or the House floor, and as a tireless and instinctive politician.
"Anybody who underestimates Anthony Weiner's ambition is a fool. And anybody who underestimates his ability as a candidate is a fool," retired Hunter College political science professor Kenneth Sherrill said. But "we're going to see, basically, if Weiner can take hits as well as he can dish them out."
In seeking a second chance from the public, Weiner will have to overcome some voters' misgivings. In a recent NBC New York-Marist Poll, half said they wouldn't even consider him, though the survey also showed that more registered Democrats now have a favorable than unfavorable impression of him.
Weiner can expect opponents to hammer at his prior prevaricating, and he said in a recent interview on the RNN cable network that he couldn't guarantee that no more pictures or people would emerge.
And while he might welcome attention to his policies rather than his past, they also have attracted some criticism. About a dozen young people recently demonstrated outside his Manhattan apartment building to denounce his proposal to make it easier to suspend disruptive public school students; "(hash)Weiner: You ask for a second chance in (hash)NYC2013 but deny students a second chance," read one sign, using Twitter's beloved hashtag marks.
Since leaving office, Weiner has put his government experience to work as a consultant for various companies.
His Democratic opponents include City Councilman Sal Albanese; Public Advocate Bill de Blasio; Comptroller John Liu; City Council Speaker Christine Quinn; the Rev. Erick Salgado, a pastor; and former Comptroller Bill Thompson.
Republican contenders include billionaire businessman John Catsimatidis, former Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman Joseph Lhota and homelessness-aid organization head George McDonald. Former White House housing official Aldolfo Carrion Jr., a Democrat who recently dropped his party affiliation, is running on the Independence Party line and also interested in the Republican nomination.
