Wireless Power Standard Years Off as Battle Heats Up

Battle lines were drawn for wireless power technology this week, as Google and AT&T backed one standard, while Samsung and chip maker Qualcomm announced their own. The two camps join a competition with yet more companies backing their own formats for how users will charge your mobile devices without plugging them in.

Wireless power requires a transmitter that provides the power and a receiver in the device that gets the charge. Several groups have come out with incompatible standards for how this power is provided, and currently few devices have any type of built-in wireless charging.

The Power Matters Alliance (PMA), which Google, AT&T, Starbucks and other companies now back, includes technology from Duracell?s Powermat product, such as the $100 iPhone 4/4S 24-Hour Power System.? Powermat uses inductive charging ? similar to the technology used to charge an electric toothbrush. It requires the transmitter and receiver be close together, placing the mobile device on the charging pad.

Samsung and Qualcomm?s Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP), also announced this week, promises more flexibility in wireless charging. Instead of induction, the standard will use magnetic resistance to transmit power, which means the transmitter and receiver don?t have to be in direct contact. No products with this technology are yet on the market.

These two join the arena with the Wireless Power Consortium, whose members include LG, Motorola and Nokia. This consortium calls its specification Qi (pronounced ?chee?) and uses a variation of inductive charging not compatible with the Power Matters Alliance's. Qi will be included in the Nokia Lumia 920 Windows 8 phone, expected in November.

Meanwhile, Intel champions its own standard, called Wireless Charging Technology. In August, Intel announced plans to integrate transmitters into the chips that power laptops. Its standard will use magnetic resonance technology.

Jason dePreaux, an analyst with research firm IHS, says that while some wireless power products are already on the market, companies are still a few years from establishing a single standard. The winner will need to include a universal, interoperable technology (as Wi-Fi is), be convenient to use and offer an inexpensive solution for companies to implement. The key, dePreaux said, is developing the infrastructure so that users can easily charge their mobile devices wirelessly at the airport, in the car, at home and at the coffee shop.

Fernando Alonso feels optimistic about remainder of 2012 ? Formula 1 news

Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has said that he attained the desired result in the Indian Grand Prix and is now feeling optimistic about remainder of the 2012 Formula 1 season.

Alonso performed tremendously well in the preceding race held at Buddh International Circuit last week and secured an incredible second podium finish after qualifying for 5th grid slot.

Even though, he is now 13 points behind his main rival, Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing who has claimed his fourth consecutive victory in the last race. Nevertheless, he is not feeling disappointed and is confidently looking forward to fight back in the forthcoming races.

Furthermore, he said that the defending champions have performed impressively well in the preceding few races and have successfully managed to maximise their potential.

Moreover, he said that they are very pleased with their overall progress in the season so far and will fight until the end.

?It's not easy at the moment to fight Red Bull but we will never give up,? he said. ?We are happy today and we have to congratulate them, they were fantastic this weekend. We want to be happy and we want to be fighting them in Brazil so I'm sure we will do it.?

Besides, he said that they have minimised the expected damage after securing second place finish in the previous race. Additionally, he said that they are positively looking forward to perform well in the remaining three grands prix of the current season.

?We lost points but I think this was more or less the plan this weekend because we knew we were not fast enough to compete against them. We lost the minimum points by finishing second, but as I said, better races will come,? he added.

The Spaniard said that they really need to make the substantial step-ups to enhance the pace of their car in order to reduce the gap to the veteran German driver in the upcoming races.

The two-time world champion has performed inspiringly well in the season until now and it will be interesting to see how he shows up in the approaching races.

Ryan to deliver speech on helping middle class

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan is preparing to explain to low-income voters how he and Mitt Romney would do more to help them than President Barack Obama.

The Wisconsin congressman planned to outline the GOP presidential ticket's case during a speech Wednesday at Cleveland State University in political crucial Ohio. With two weeks to go until votes are counted, Ryan's trip to an urban campus suggests Romney's campaign is looking for any vote still available.

No Republican has won the White House without carrying Ohio.

Aides said Ryan's formal remarks would focus on upward mobility for millions of people looking for work and those struggling to get by on their current paychecks. For instance, that includes highlighting Romney's plan for more educational choices for parents and a strengthened safety net for people who need assistance.

To middle-class voters, Ryan was expected to argue that Washington is spending too much and that Obama's economic policies have not done enough to fix a struggling economy.

Ryan, a fiscal hawk and the top budget writer for House Republicans, planned to compare that record to Romney's proposal that he says would create 12 million jobs and help workers take home more of their paychecks.

The Longform Guide to Pittsburgh

To live in Pittsburgh is to move between highs and lows?prosperity and bust, wins and losses, trends and tradition--sometimes in a single day or in a single neighborhood. It also means putting french fries in sandwiches and salads. Who could resist that? Here are five stories about the ?Burgh.

The Heart of Football Beats in Aliquippa
S.L. Price ? Sports Illustrated ? January 2011

The story of a small town just outside Pittsburgh that has suffered through a half-century of economic decline, racial tension, and endless crime. Despite that trajectory, or perhaps because of it, Aliquippa has also produced an astounding number of NFL players.

?Tonight, as always, they'll slap the plaque over the door that reads WE RULE OUR HOUSE as they spill out to the field. Then they'll destroy Shady Side 41--0. Next week it will be Beaver 34--0, then Ford City 26--7 before a 19--6 loss to South Fayette in Aliquippa's record 21st appearance in the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League final. Before all that, though, they will put on their pads and tape their wrists. Too many will take black markers and write carefully on the tape. rip, it will say, on wrist after wrist. RIP KLJ SR. BDB; RIP EAG; RIP WALL; RIP UNCLE CLYDE; RIP TDW; RIP TMG.

"Rest in Peace, Cousin. Brother. Friend. Father.

"Then they won't look like boys anymore. Because what remains in Aliquippa, too, is a kind of war.?

Double Joy: Myron Cope and the Pittsburgh Sound
Elena Passarello ? Creative Nonfiction ? 2008

On accent, culture, and a legendary football announcer:

?Every Sunday, we watched the Steelers on tiny dorm room TVs with the sound muted and the stereo cranked so we could underscore the picture with Cope?s play-by-play. ?What the hell does ?Yoi? mean?? I asked. They died laughing. ?Whut the hail!? they parroted back to me. Whuut the Haaaaail??

Rich Man?s Burden
Christopher Hitchens ? Atlantic ? December 2006

On the impact of steel giant, Andrew Carnegie.

?For decades, his name was inseparable from the two stock phrases (robber baron and Gilded Age) that were allowed to define late-nineteenth-century American industrialism. John Dos Passos makes him a no-less stock character in The 42nd Parallel, the first volume of the U.S.A. trilogy, in which someone has to embody?as in an E. L. Doctorow cameo?the figure of the incarnate acquisitionist. When I taught at the University of Pittsburgh, in the 1990s, the remains of the old Homestead steel plant were much visited by both locals and tourists, either as a museum of the American Rust Belt or as a shrine to the Gettysburg of the lutte de classe. Elsewhere in the city, if a gallery or museum or university was not named for Andrew Carnegie, it was named for one or another of his partners or rivals in the shape of either a Mellon or a Frick. This was widely viewed as the tribute, in the form of conscience money, that had been originally raised from the blood of the toilers. In cities with less radical traditions, Carnegie and his benefactions were regarded with equal simplicity as the living proof of the American dream and the Horatio Alger principle.?

Mayor of Rust
Sue Halpern ? New York Times Magazine ? February 2011

The possible resurrection of a Pittsburgh borough.

?Urban decline has been around just about as long as there have been cities, but the degeneration of America?s industrial heartland, because it cuts across a wide swath of the country and is as much about jobs as it is about habitation, has seemed both intractable and inevitable. Earlier efforts to address it involved razing whole neighborhoods and erecting Robert Moses-inspired projects. But in places like Youngstown, Detroit and Pittsburgh, as well as satellites like Braddock, where urban blight was not just a matter of run-down neighborhoods but of manufacturing plants packing up and moving away, even such radical solutions offered little hope. It?s one thing to replace substandard housing stock, quite another to reinvent an economy.?

Can You Say Hero?
Tom Junod ? Esquire ? November 1998

A profile of one of Mr. Rogers, who got his start at Pittsburgh?s WQED station and filmed there from 1968 until his final show.

?The old navy-blue sport jacket comes off first, then the dress shoes, except that now there is not the famous sweater or the famous sneakers to replace them, and so after the shoes he's on to the dark socks, peeling them off and showing the blanched skin of his narrow feet. The tie is next, the scanty black batwing of a bow tie hand-tied at his slender throat, and then the shirt, always white or light blue, whisked from his body button by button. He wears an undershirt, of course, but no matter--soon that's gone, too, as is the belt, as are the beige trousers, until his undershorts stand as the last impediment to his nakedness. They are boxers, egg-colored, and to rid himself of them he bends at the waist, and stands on one leg, and hops, and lifts one knee toward his chest and then the other and then ? Mister Rogers has no clothes on.

"Nearly every morning of his life, Mister Rogers has gone swimming, and now, here he is, standing in a locker room, seventy years old and as white as the Easter Bunny, rimed with frost wherever he has hair, gnawed pink in the spots where his dry skin has gone to flaking, slightly wattled at the neck, slightly stooped at the shoulder, slightly sunken in the chest, slightly curvy at the hips, slightly pigeoned at the toes, slightly aswing at the fine bobbing nest of himself? and yet when he speaks, it is in that voice, his voice, the famous one, the unmistakable one, the televised one, the voice dressed in sweater and sneakers, the soft one, the reassuring one, the curious and expository one, the sly voice that sounds adult to the ears of children and childish to the ears of adults, and what he says, in the midst of all his bobbing nudity, is as understated as it is obvious: ?Well, Tom, I guess you've already gotten a deeper glimpse into my daily routine than most people have.? "

Lincoln Businesses Say Less Traffic Due To Bypass Will Boost Sales

LINCOLN (CBS13) ? The Highway 65 Bypass opened a couple weeks ago, taking drivers around rather than through downtown Lincoln; and hundreds came out to celebrate as that stretch of road was renamed Saturday.

Those who live in Lincoln know that traffic was a disaster.

?The traffic through here has been just a nightmare,? said Scott Giller of Dillian?s Bar and Grill.

Residents say they hated being stuck in the shuffle.

?This was such a heavy commute route that no one could stop. They had to keep going. You were in a slow line going through town,? said resident Debbie Shoro.

Say goodbye to the traffic of Highway 65 and hello to Lincoln Boulevard.

?It?s fun to go back into town and see the shops,? said Shoro.

But not everyone is so sure it will help businesses.

?I don?t know how good the businesses are going to be, because there?s not too many cars going through,? a resident said.

Ionically, business owners say fewer cars means more business.

?One business owner along the street says In seven years of owning his shop, only five commuters ever came in,? said Shoro.

Giller says it?s been a boost because residents now want to dine downtown.

?It was always such a problem to get through Lincoln from the opposite side of town; and so having the traffic situation ease up has been wonderful for us,? said Giller.

?We will have lots of parking for customers able to walk to stores nearby,? said Crystal Pierson, Fashion Fo Paws owner.

?So many towns die when a bypass goes around them and takes the commuter traffic away, but Lincoln is poised to do just the opposite,? said Shoro.

This 12-mile bypass between the cities of Lincoln and Sheridan is the most expensive construction project in Placer County history.

Observations on film art : Animation in Vancouver

Kristin here:

I didn?t manage to see all the animated films at the Vancouver International Film Festival, but I saw three. That is, I saw two animated features and one documentary about an ambitious and lengthy project that never saw the light of day except in butchered form. The films differ widely in subject and will probably appeal to quite different audiences.

The young

Ernest et C?lestine (2012, co-directors Benjamin Renner, Vincent Patar, and St?phane Aubier) is one of those irresistible cartoons based on a well-loved children?s book series. From 1982 to 2004 , Belgian artist Gabrielle Vincent (1928-2004) created this series, based on the unlikely friendship of a little-girl mouse and an adult bear.? The film?s imagery replicates the style of the books? water-color illustrations (see above). Although the series is not well known in the English-language markets, a few translations have appeared. Most are out of print and apparently very collectible, though there is an English-language volume coming out on November 1. This film version might well foster the popularity of the books internationally.

Bears and mice are here assumed to be dire enemies, a premise set up in the opening as C?lestine and her fellow orphans are told a cautionary tale by an elderly lady supervisor. It turns out, however, that mice are Tooth Fairies, and that occasionally involves their visiting bear families to exchange coins for the baby teeth of cubs. Such a mission leads to C?lestine visiting a bear family (in the candy shop pictured above) and meeting Ernest, a large bear who vainly attempts to make a living as a street musician. The pair become unlikely friends, and as a result become outcasts living together in Ernest?s cottage in the forest. Eventually each is tried in court for having transgressed the natural boundaries between their species.

Visually the film is charming, though narratively it clearly is intended for small children. Unfortunately the screening I attended had an audience mainly made up of adults, only a few of whom brought children with them. Children accustomed to the break-neck pace of anime and contemporary television cartoons may not have the patience for the calm, leisurely narrative pace in Ernest et C?lestine. Young children and those with more appreciation for traditional narratives will delight in it however, and it would be worth seeking it out in art-house screenings and, with luck, in video release. Its message of tolerance and understanding among widely different sorts of ?people? is simple but effective.

A book of the art of the film, with illustrations by Vincent, is soon to be released in France.

?

The old

At the opposite end of the age range is Wrinkles (2012, Ignacio Ferreras), a Spanish animated feature about an elderly gentleman, Emilio, whose adult children become fed up with caring for him as he slips into the early stages of Alzheimer?s. They consign him to a slick, soulless care facility and visit him only rarely at holidays. Discouraged and unhappy at first, Emilio gradually comes to appreciate the small pleasures and support the other ?clients? at the home can bring each other (see bottom). His roommate, a cynical long-term resident who practices minor con tricks on vulnerable, disoriented neighbors, nevertheless provides humor and support. A still-healthy wife who has nevertheless come to the facility to take care of her husband, an advanced Alzheimer?s patient, shows that love can bring a trace of reaction even from a seemingly unresponsive person.

The story is touching, and the opening provides a surprise moment that conveys Emilio?s encroaching confusion well. The animation, though fairly limited, is well designed and attractive. The endings for the various patients seem to put a distinctly cheerier spin on the grim advance of Alzheimer?s than one would imagine to be appropriate to the subject. Still, the film looks at the subject compassionately and manages several touching scenes.

?

The ghost

Vancouver was the venue for the world premiere of Kevin Schreck?s documentary, Persistence of Vision (2012). It deals with animator Richard Williams, who made a successful career running a studio?primarily making animated commercials and credit sequences. Back in the 1980s and 1990s I must have passed it?on London?s Soho Square?dozens of times completely unawares.) One of Williams? employees also devised the technique for merging live-action and cartoons that was used for Robert Zemeckis? Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988), and perhaps the best-known achievement of Williams? studio was the animation in that film.

Schreck does a good job of presenting an overview of Williams? career, but his real fascination is with the one doomed project that Williams pursued for about twenty-five years: a feature-length, absurdly technically complex feature to be called The Thief and the Cobbler. The scene above showing one of the characters performing an elaborate card trick is dazzling to behold. It takes place against a neutral background, but a battle scene, a substantial portion of which is shown in Persistence of Vision, goes much further, combining dizzying shifts through convoluted settings with mind-boggling movements of figures.

Williams? studio worked on the film from 1964 to 1992, but only part-time, fitting it in among their various commissions. Schreck has tracked down several of the main animators who worked for Williams during substantial stretches of this period, and they give invaluable information about what became a legendary epic. Williams refused to participate, but there is quite a bit of historical documentary footage of him. Much of the original material from the film was destroyed, but Schreck, often with the help of his interviewees and others, tracked down original material in various degrees of completion. Several shivery animated sequences consisting of simple pencil tests are included, as are other scenes in later stages of animation. The result is a precious glimpse into the film that might have been.

Ultimately Warner Bros. committed to finance and release the film. This might possibly have worked, but by one piece of misfortune, design elements for The Thief and the Cobbler made their way to Disney and were, putatively (and plausibly) used for the Genie and other components of Aladdin (1992). This was a blow to the commercial viability of Williams? film. That, in combination with Williams? failure to complete it by the contractual deadline meant that The Thief and the Cobbler was turned over to a completion insurer. Somehow (in a deal not explained in Persistence of Vision), Miramax ended up with the project. They stitched together the existing sequences using new footage, including Disney-style musical numbers, something that Williams had been determined to avoid. In 1993 Miramax released a highly revised version of The Thief and the Cobbler.

Williams seems to have been one of those artists who works best when kept on a very tight leash. The man was brilliant when it came to making TV commercials, some of which are shown in Persistence of Vision. He created some memorable credits sequences, also shown. I vividly remember seeing Tony Richardson?s The Charge of the Light Brigade in 1968. That was two years before I took my first film course, but even then I realized that the credits were better than the film they graced:

Williams did some of the late Pink Panther ones, too. Clearly, given a short, immutable length, he could come up with a gem. Similarly, when he worked as a collaborator on another director?s film, as with Roger Rabbit, he apparently didn?t become overly ambitious and unrealistic in his goals. It was apparently this one mad vision that slowly drew him to overstep the bounds of feasibility.

Williams? legacy will not rest simply in these credit sequences and ads. Nor will it reside only in the images in Persistence of Vision, ranging from jumpy pencil tests to semi-finished sequences (and the sequences included in the unfortunate Miramax version). Williams wrote a book, The Animator?s Survival Kit, initially published in 2002, and, coincidentally, released in an expanded edition just last month. It is considered one of the basis books in the field and is used by amateurs and pros alike. Williams discusses the new edition in a brief clip, and one can see his sincere enthusiasm and also his restless energy. He also gives master-classes in animation.

Whether Williams could ever have created a narrative structure to pull together the brilliant set-pieces on display in Persistence of Vision is another question. Clearly his colleagues still regard him with a mix of admiration, devotion, and exasperation. Schreck?s film hints at a masterpiece that was mutilated and yet also suggests that the masterpiece itself was a elusive vision that was problematic from the start.

We enjoyed meeting Kevin and line producer Sarah Timberlake Taylor at the festival. During the introduction to the second of three screenings, Kevin expressed his surprise at the fact that the first and second screenings were both better attended than he expected. From the Q & A, I gathered that the audience included some animation buffs well acquainted with Williams? career. The Thief and the Cobbler is clearly well known in the world of academic animation history. Buffs will be delighted that Schreck has pulled together so much material and given us as full a look at this lost film, masterpiece or not, as we are ever likely to have.

One problem that Kevin explained is that he cannot release the film into theaters (or presumably on DVD or? VOD). It contains extensive clips of copyrighted material, including the various credits sequences and ads by Williams? studio, short segments from Aladdin and other Hollywood films, as well as The Thief and the Cobbler in its version released by Miramax. This seems a tremendous pity. Given the historical and critical nature of Kevin?s film, it seems possible that such clips could be justified as fair use.

Much has been made of Room 237, the analytical documentary about Kubrick?s The Shining, which was also shown at Vancouver and other festivals. It has a theatrical release in the USA through IFC. Apparently no permissions were obtained from the owners of the copyrights for The Shining and other Kubrick films excerpted in the documentary, with fair use being claimed. As usual, no court cases have so far been filed, and so it is not clear whether fair use actually applies to such extensive uses of clips in historical and analytical studies. Persistence of Vision seems another clear-cut case of fair use, and it would be encouraging to see a distributor courageous enough to release it outside the festival circuit without ?permissions? being sought.

October 21: David Cairns has kindly written to point out that there is an epic fan edit of the original footage of The Thief and the Cobbler. It?s incomplete, of course, but it?s 96 minutes long?and obviously a labor of love on the part of Garrett Gilchrist.

Bomb kills Bahraini policeman on patrol

ABU DHABI (Reuters) - A policeman in Bahrain was killed and another critically injured in a bomb attack while on patrol south of the capital Manama, security officials said on Friday, as further unrest convulsed the Gulf Arab kingdom and close U.S. ally.

Bahrain, where the U.S. Fifth Fleet is based as a bulwark against Iran, has been volatile since majority Shi'ite Muslims began protesting against alleged discrimination last year.

Those protests were initially crushed by the kingdom's Sunni Muslim monarchy, with martial law and help from Gulf neighbors. However, smaller scale demonstrations have since resumed and anti-government protesters clash with security forces several times every week in the small island country.

The policemen were attacked in the village of Akr late on Thursday by rioters with petrol bombs and an unspecified "explosive device", the information authority said in a statement, citing Major General Tariq Hasan al-Hasan, the security chief.

One policeman died of his injuries on Friday morning while the other was in a critical condition, it said. An investigation was underway to find the assailants, Hasan said.

Earlier on Friday, Bahrain's interior ministry described the incident in the mostly Shi'ite village as a "terrorist attack".

Thousands of people attended the policeman's funeral in the mainly Sunni area of Rifaa on Friday afternoon, witnesses told Reuters.

Some mourners shouted "Down, down with Issa Qassim", in reference to Sheikh Issa Qassim, a spiritual guide to Shi'ites in Bahrain. Qassim is not connected to any party but led a pro-democracy protest of some 100,000 people in March.

Bahraini police have been the target of such bombings several times in the past year, most recently in May when four policemen were wounded.

Shi'ites complain of discrimination in the electoral system, jobs, housing and education and say they are mistreated by government departments, the police and the army. Government promises of action to address their concerns have come to nothing, they say.

An anti-government demonstration attended by thousands and organized by the main al Wefaq opposition bloc on Friday afternoon west of Manama passed off peacefully, witnesses said.

A commission of international legal experts reported in November that torture had been systematically used on protesters to punish them and extract hundreds of confessions. It recommended reviewing activists' jail sentences.

Bahraini authorities accuse regional Shi'ite power Iran of encouraging the unrest and have promised a tough response to violent protests as talks with the opposition have stalled.

If you do't own a home but rent it, you can still ... - Business Networking

It seems contradictory why would anyone who doesn?t own property need homeowners insurance? Though the name is deceiving, home insurance isn?t just for those who own property.

Perhaps you?re fresh out of college, leaving residence housing and moving into your first apartment. You don?t have a lot, but you want to protect what?s yours. Or, perhaps you just got a new job and decided to upgrade. Your old second-hand furniture has been replaced with a brand new set, and you finally got a flat screen TV. Now that your possessions are worth something, you?re afraid of losing them.

Even if you don?t own your home, it?s still your home; it?s the place you crash after a long day, your pictures are plastered on the walls, your friends crash on the couch. If you want to protect your home or at least the contents inside of it you need a special type of home insurance called renters insurance.

If your apartment building catches on fire and you?re not insured, you will lose everything. Your furniture, your appliances, your clothes, jewelry, DVDs and books. Not only are you out of a home, you?ve lost everything you own. And unless you have renters insurance, there?s not a whole lot you can do about it.

There are all sorts of reasons people opt out of this type of homeowners insurance. It could be as simple as not knowing it exists. It might be because they mistakenly believe they are covered under their landlord?s insurance. They might think it is too expensive. Or, perhaps it?s a classic case of ?it can?t happen to me.?

The problem is, it can happen to anyone. And when you think about it, if you live in a building with dozens, or even hundreds of tenants, the chances aren?t so low that something will go wrong. Attaining quality renters insurance isn?t difficult, and it isn?t as expensive as many people believe. If you already have car insurance, your provider may even give you a discount on a home insurance policy. Even if that doesn?t apply to you, most renters insurance plans only cost $100 to $300 each year a small price to pay for the peace of mind that comes with knowing your belongings are protected.

Feds probe complaints that Jeep Patriots stall

(AP) ? U.S. government safety regulators are investigating complaints that engines on Jeep Patriot SUVs can stall without warning at highway speeds.

The problem caused one crash in which two people were hurt, according to documents posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.

The investigation affects about 112,000 Patriots from the 2011 and 2012 model years that were sold in the U.S. Chrysler Group LLC, the maker of Jeeps, sold another 18,000 in Canada.

NHTSA said Friday that it received a dozen complaints about stalling. Ten of the incidents occurred while the Jeeps were going 65 miles per hour or faster. In eight cases the Patriots could not be restarted and had to be towed.

"The complaints show an apparent increasing trend, with all but three received within the past six months," NHTSA said.

In one complaint, a Subaru driver told NHTSA that on May 2, a Patriot's engine died while it was on Interstate 5 on the West Coast. The Subaru was behind the Patriot when it happened, and the woman driving the SUV did not hit the brakes, according to the complaint. "I did not see a brake light, and it took me a couple of seconds to realize she had slowed," the Subaru driver wrote. "By the time I slammed on my brakes, I hit her. I was still going 55 mph."

The Subaru's air bags inflated, and the crash injured the Subaru driver and seriously hurt the driver's 85-year-old mother, who was a passenger, according to the complaint. NHTSA does not identify people who file complaints or say where they are from.

Chrysler said it is cooperating with NHTSA and that the Patriot has an excellent safety record. Patriot owners who are concerned about their vehicles should contact their dealer, the company said.

NHTSA said it will investigate to see whether the problem is widespread enough to order a recall. So far the Patriots have not been recalled.

Danielle Lineker: If Gary had four girls, being step mum might have ...

Danielle Lineker: Step families are normal. People need to talk about them more

Model and actress Danielle Lineker is mum to Ella, 10, and step mum to Gary Lineker's boys, George, 21, Harry, 18, Tobias, 16, and Angus, 14. She talks to Parentdish about her own upbringing in a step family and life with Gary and the kids.

Ella is into the double figures, how are you finding that?

It's certainly different from the early years! She has her own mind and opinions and is incredibly strong willed. Although as Gary reminds me, 'the apple never falls far from the tree!'

What's your family set-up with the boys and Ella?

Ella is with us full time and sees her dad (ex-footballer Adam Willis) at weekends. The boys split their time between our house and their mum's, and as the older two drive it's pretty easy-going and relaxed all round really.

Do Ella and the boys get on?

Brilliantly, although she knows how to wind them up! I think the boy/girl mix really helped them settle with each other, and the boys are quite grown-up which also helps.

What sort of things is Ella into?

At the moment, mainly Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj! She's loves the outdoors though, and is always climbing trees and riding her bike. The boys' influence definitely helps with that I think, which I'm very grateful for. I am adamant she will not sit in front of the TV and computer when she could be out and about.

Danielle Lineker: Step families are normal. People need to talk about them morDanielle and Ella. Pic: PA

Does the pressure put on young girls in today's world worry you now Ella is nearing her teens?

It really does. It's one of the reasons she is at a school out in Surrey and not in London, as I would worry about her growing up in a big city. There's so much pressure for young girls to race to grow up and a huge amount of temptation way beyond her years around. She has her own mind and is a strong girl, which I think is vital today.

i

Having Gary's sons helps too as she certainly has no interest in boys after living with them!

i

You're supporting the Argos Toy Exchange with Barnardo's. What's the campaign all about?

You can donate unwanted children's toys at donation stations in Argos and Barnardo's stores around the country to help disadvantaged children. I've worked with Barnardo's before, and as a mum the charity and the campaign are very close to my heart. It's a great excuse to have a clear out too - which I really needed to do with Ella's stuff - and help your children understand how they can help other kids. Ella has a huge amount of things and is a real hoarder, so it was a battle of wills to get her to give things up!

You're from a step family yourself. Tell us about your experience growing up.

I was the oldest and my parents divorced when I was young. Having a step family was never an issue; it was just the way we lived and I always had half brothers and sisters in my life. It wasn't an issue and it shouldn't be one.

Danielle Lineker: Step families are normal. People need to talk about them morDanielle and Gary. Pic: PA

How were your first few years with Gary's boys?

We got on straightaway, but it takes so much time to form proper and close relationships with new people. It's a completely new set-up with new people and new personalities, which took time to settle. I remember meeting them all for the first time and I was so nervous! But we got there, slowly but surely. I think it really helped that they are such laid back boys, and Ella was a very young girl.

i

If Gary had four daughters it might have been a different story!

i

What is your advice for other step families?

It's all about time. Don't push and force anything, whatever the ages of the children and situation you're in. It's important to be patient and keep the lines of communication open.

i

No one, no matter who they are, will suddenly get on brilliantly with a brand new person in their life. Take it slowly.

i

There doesn't seem to be the help and support available for step families either, and step parenting is not spoken about enough. One in three families are now step, and it is so normal and natural, we just don't hear about it enough for people to realise. It needs to be more open and honest.

Do you think you will ever have children with Gary?

Well, never say never, and of course if we had one together we would be absolutely thrilled, but we haven't got any planned at the moment. Our house is busy enough!

Danielle Lineker is the ambassador for the Argos Toy Exchange, an initiative launched in partnership with Barnardo's to encourage families to donate toys to raise money for the UK's most disadvantaged children. Kalona Approves National Flood Insurance Program | KCII | The ...

Author: KCII News - Nathan Swenson

The Kalona City Council made a decision on the City?s participation in the National Flood Insurance Program this week. At Monday?s meeting the Council voted 4 to 1 to join the National Flood Insurance Program or NFIP.

City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh shares residents will be able to purchase insurance through the program before the FEMA maps become effective on January 16th of next year. He says affected residents can use any insurance provider that can write a flood policy.

If homeowners choose not to get the insurance, they?ll be entitled to less federal disaster funds through FEMA. Schlaubaugh adds houses located in high risk areas that are not covered will not be eligible for federally backed mortgages.

Home Improvement Has Never Been This Easy Before - PDF

Home Improvement Has Never Been This Easy Before

el cajon electrician

Are you looking to start a home improvement project? If you feel that you are lost and you do
not know how to use any tools, then you're not alone. It's normal to feel this way, but you
don't have to, thanks to the information below. Read the following article to find out where to
begin with home improvements.

Think about adding coordinated metal fixtures to bathrooms to make them look more modern
without spending too much. There are lots of different finishes and styles available in drawer
pulls, shower curtain rods, toilet paper holders and towel racks. You can find complete,
coordinating packages of these items in many home improvements stores.

It's a good idea to have a professional take a look at your existing floors before you commit
yourself to the expensive proposition of installing all-new hardwood. You may already have
one under old carpet! You will wind up with a nicer looking, higher-quality floor for less
money.

Verify the credentials of all professionals you hire to work inside your home. Make sure the
workers have the experience and qualifications to complete your job with the highest quality
work. You should be able to avoid a lot of mishaps by checking credentials.

Chandeliers might also be a nice touch. Even some very fancy and very attractive
chandeliers can be purchased for well under $500, and they can add over a thousand dollars
worth of value to the home. Also, chandeliers add brightness to a room as well as a sparking
appearance.

Home improvement has much more to do with saving money than it does with spending
money. New appliances are more energy efficient. Fixing the roof and improving the
insulation of your house will save on heating costs. Always be mindful of your finances and
make a habit of planning ahead.

Most basements have very little, if any, natural lighting. Be sure to install enough lighting that
your basement is usable. In the best of scenarios, your basement will have a portion of the
walls that exceed ground level. If this is the case, you will be able to add some windows for
ambient lighting.

Adding weather stripping to both doors and windows can really help your home become
more energy efficient. With the materials available at most hardware stores, this is a very
easy and inexpensive change you can make to your home that will have a lasting impact on
both your cooling and heating bills. You will also realize that you can drastically cut out the
drafts on those extremely chilly nights.

Old toothbrushes prove to be great cleaning tools. Old toothbrushes will work in the sink,
around the faucet, or in the garage. Even better, they are free! When it is time to replace your
toothbrush, don't throw away a perfectly useable brush; instead, simply move it to wherever
you store your cleaning supplies. Use the money saved for future renovations!

Hopefully, the advice in this article will enable you to undertake some of the improvement
projects you have been considering around the house for a while now. There are few limits to
the different sorts of home improvement projects you can tackle if you invest the appropriate

Germany's Schaeuble urges big leap forward in euro integration

ABU DHABI (Reuters) - German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble has called for a great leap forward in European integration ahead of a summit of EU leaders, urging the creation of a new commissioner with power over budgets and reform of European Parliament decision-making.

Schaeuble, a longtime advocate of closer EU integration who is not shy about voicing his personal views, said he had spoken with Chancellor Angela Merkel about his proposals and that she was "somewhat more cautious".

"We must now make bigger steps in the direction of a fiscal union," Schaeuble told reporters on his way back from a trip to Asia. "We must use this chance."

He said a new "currency commissioner" should have the power to reject national budgets that were not in line with the euro zone's strict fiscal criteria, without specifying whether such a figure should have the power to impose penalties.

The model for the position would be the bloc's competition commissioner, who Schaeuble said was "feared in the whole world".

He also called for more flexible voting arrangements in the European Parliament to accommodate closer integration between euro zone states.

European officials are looking for ways to boost the democratic legitimacy of their drive towards a closer union, but have run up against the dilemma that the European Parliament includes countries from outside the euro zone.

"In the European Parliament lawmakers only from countries directly affected by a given issue should vote on it," Schaeuble said.

Such a reform would accelerate the trend towards a two-speed Europe, with the euro zone as an inner core.

UNEASE

Some of Schaeuble's ideas are likely to stir unease even within the euro zone, where countries such as France are reluctant to surrender more sovereignty to EU institutions.

Weaker economies such as Greece, reeling from German-backed austerity programs, will also be wary of entrenching the power of outsiders to run their financial affairs.

A previous proposal from Schaeuble for a "Sparkommissar", or savings commissioner, was quietly dropped after it stirred fury in recession-mired Greece and got a cool reception from Germany's other European partners.

Undaunted, Schaeuble said it was important to build momentum for greater fiscal and political integration, saying the bloc could launch a convention by December if it made good progress.

Merkel has previously said she would like the EU's December summit to agree a concrete date for the start of a convention.

The idea recalls the 100-plus strong gathering of EU lawmakers set up in 2001 - inspired by the Philadelphia Convention that led to the adoption of the U.S. federal constitution - charged with preparing a European charter.

The document that emerged was rejected by French and Dutch voters in 2005 and a watered down version ended up forming the basis of the EU's Lisbon Treaty, which is in force today.

Many member states, recalling the lengthy disputes and setbacks that preceded the Lisbon treaty's entry into force, are reluctant to embark on another process of institutional reform.

But Germany believes a much closer fiscal and political union is needed to ensure the success of painful economic reforms and the long-term survival of the euro currency.

"We need a lasting solution," Schaeuble said.
