Planet Hunters

When I first reviewed the Planet Hunters Web site in January 2011, the project was in its infancy. The site and its navigation had some bugs to work out. But it had a compelling yet seemingly quixotic premise: That a group of volunteers, peering in Web browsers at graphs of stars' brightness based on public data from NASA's Kepler planet-hunting telescope, might be able to discover planets that Kepler's own search algorithms may have missed.

Two years later, that concept has been borne out beyond any skeptic's wildest imaginings. In September 2011, Planet Hunters announced its first two planet candidates, and soon after announced several more. The project's first confirmed discovery?a planet circling a binary star in a quadruple star system?came in fifth on CNN's list of the top 10 science stories of 2012.

In January 2013, the project announced a second confirmed planet?a Jupiter-sized world orbiting in the so-called habitable zone of a sunlike star?as well as 42 new planetary candidates, including 15 in their respective stars' habitable zones. These worlds?ranging in size from about 2.5 Earth radii up to slightly larger than Jupiter?are too large to support life as we know it, presumably being gas giants, they may well have large moons.

Planet Hunters volunteer Kian Jek was recently awarded the Chambliss Amateur Achievement Award, the American Astronomical Society's most prestigious award given annually to an amateur astronomer, for his work on behalf of the project. Kian, one of the two hunters credited with Planet Hunters' initial confirmed discovery, is one of a small cadre of skilled volunteers that have supported the Planet Hunters science team?who, although professionals, also volunteer their time to work on this project? by vetting and cataloguing potential planetary candidates, modeling stellar and planetary systems, keeping tabs on exotic variable stars such as ?heartbeat binaries? and dwarf novae, as well as tracking unlisted eclipsing binary systems in which a pair of stars orbit each other in our line of sight, each eclipsing the other in turn.

PC Planet Hunting
I?ve participated in a number of ?citizen science? online astronomy projects over the years, but none ?has sparked my imagination like Planet Hunters, which lets anyone with a computer and an Internet connection take part in one of modern science?s great quests: the search for planets orbiting other stars. On the Planet Hunters site, you can look for signs of these so-called exoplanets in public data from NASA?s Kepler mission. If you?re among the first to report a new planet, you get credit for the find and in some cases can have your name appear as a co-author on the discovery paper.

Planet Hunters is a collaboration between Yale University and the Zooniverse, a Web hub that hosts a number of citizen science projects. It got started with astronomy projects, the first being Galaxy Zoo, in which the public was enlisted to classify galaxies in images from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey; it?s since added others such as Moon Zoo and Solar StormWatch. Nearly half of the 14 Zooniverse projects are astronomy related; of the others, one of them, Cell Slider focuses on identifying cells for cancer research; others are related to tracking wildlife, climate science, and studying the ancient Greeks. ?Although Planet Hunters isn?t officially connected to the Kepler mission, there are close ties and cooperation between the two.

150,000 Points of Light

Kepler, a space telescope, was launched in March 2009, tasked with ??exploring the structure and diversity of planetary systems?.? (by discovering them), looking in particular for Earth-sized planets, and worlds in a star's habitable zone. After Kepler completed its basic mission in 2012, the mission was extended for another 3 years.

Kepler uses the ?transit method? for planet hunting, searching for tiny dips in a star?s brightness caused by the passage (transit) of a planet in front of the star. Kepler repeatedly (every 29 minutes) images the same star field near the constellation Cygnus showing more than 150,000 stars, using a photometer to precisely measure each star's brightness. These readings generate light curves?plots showing variations in a star's luminosity over time. A transit shows as a string of data points descending below the star's light curve. Kepler uses search algorithms to find transits in its data?so far it's credited with more than 100 exoplanet discoveries, and has published a list of more than 2,700 planet candidates.

But Kepler monitors a huge variety of stars: some of constant brightness, others that flicker erratically or pulsate like clockwork. Eclipsing binaries?two stars that orbit each other and periodically eclipse one another?often show transits similar to those from planets. Although Kepler's planet search algorithms are very good at detecting prospective planets, they don?t catch everything, and the human eye has been shown to be better at detecting anomalies in some pattern-recognition tasks than a computer. That's where Planet Hunters comes in. Having multiple participants view each image greatly improves the odds of not missing a world.

French take airport in Mali Islamist stronghold

By James Regan and David Lewis, Reuters

KONNA, Mali - French forces in Mali have seized the airport and the bridge over the Niger River at the Islamist rebel-held stronghold of Gao, the French Defence Ministry said Saturday.

French and Malian forces have advanced rapidly against Islamist militant fighters holding the Saharan north of the West African state after France intervened earlier this month at the request of the Malian government.

On Friday, al-Qaida-allied fighters were forced to pull back under relentless French air strikes and the town of Hombori, about 100miles southwest of Gao, was recaptured.

French and Malian troops have been pushing forward on either side of the Niger River, securing several farming towns recaptured over the last week.

Gao, with the other Saharan desert towns of Timbuktu and Kidal, has been occupied since last year by an Islamist alliance that includes AQIM, the north African franchise of al-Qaida.

Mali's national radio said Hombori's inhabitants turned out to cheer the government soldiers.

Western and African leaders say the U.N.-backed intervention in Mali is necessary to stop the country's north - a vast, lawless tract of desert and mountains that juts into the Sahara - from becoming a safe haven for radical Islamist jihadists seeking to launch international attacks.

A Malian officer and residents living in the area south of Gao reported Thursday that the militants had blown up a bridge at Tassiga, south of Ansongo, on the road following the Niger River down to Niger.

Two civilians were reported killed when their vehicle drove off the destroyed bridge, the same sources said.?

Steve Jobs threatened Palm with lawsuit over employee poaching

According to a court filing made public yesterday, Steve Jobs threatened Palm with a patent lawsuit in order to stop them from attempting to hire employees away from Apple. The communications between then-Palm CEO Edward Colligan and Jobs took place in 2007. The emails became public as part of a civil action brought against Apple, Google, Intel by five workers that alleged that these companies illegally conspired to end competition for one another?s employees. The threat from Jobs didn?t phase Colligan. According to Reuters:

Colligan told Jobs that the plan was "likely illegal," and that Palm was not "intimidated" by the threat.

?If you choose the litigation route, we can respond with our own claims based on patent assets, but I don't think litigation is the answer," he said.

We knew most of this before, but the patent threat is new. No poaching deals are potentially illegal as they tend to lead to lower wages for workers because no other company in their field will hire them away from their current position, giving them little or no leverage to negotiate better salaries and benefits.

Apple, Google, Adobe, Intel, Intuit Inc. and Walt Disney Co's Pixar all settled with the US Justice Department in 2010 in order to avoid prosecution over these agreements. Since the current legal action is civil, these companies may still be liable. Judge Lucy Koh -- yes, the same Lucy Koh as the Apple vs Samsung trial -- is currently considering whether or not to allow the lawsuit to proceed as a class action, which gives the plaintiff?s a chance to receive a larger settlement should they win.

So what do you think, is business just business, or did Apple and Steve Jobs cross the line?

Scientists underestimated potential for Tohoku earthquake: Now what?

Jan. 23, 2013 ? The massive Tohoku, Japan, earthquake in 2011 and Sumatra-Andaman superquake in 2004 stunned scientists because neither region was thought to be capable of producing a megathrust earthquake with a magnitude exceeding ? 8.4.

Now earthquake scientists are going back to the proverbial drawing board and admitting that existing predictive models looking at maximum earthquake size are no longer valid.

In a new analysis published in the journal Seismological Research Letters, a team of scientists led by Oregon State University's Chris Goldfinger describes how past global estimates of earthquake potential were constrained by short historical records and even shorter instrumental records. To gain a better appreciation for earthquake potential, he says, scientists need to investigate longer paleoseismic records.

"Once you start examining the paleoseismic and geodetic records, it becomes apparent that there had been the kind of long-term plate deformation required by a giant earthquake such as the one that struck Japan in 2011," Goldfinger said. "Paleoseismic work has confirmed several likely predecessors to Tohoku, at about 1,000-year intervals."

The researchers also identified long-term "supercycles" of energy within plate boundary faults, which appear to store this energy like a battery for many thousands of years before yielding a giant earthquake and releasing the pressure. At the same time, smaller earthquakes occur that do not to any great extent dissipate the energy stored within the plates.

The newly published analysis acknowledges that scientists historically may have underestimated the number of regions capable of producing major earthquakes on a scale of Tohoku.

"Since the 1970s, scientists have divided the world into plate boundaries that can generate 9.0 earthquakes versus those that cannot," said Goldfinger, a professor in OSU's College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences. "Those models were already being called into question when Sumatra drove one stake through their heart, and Tohoku drove the second one.

"Now we have no models that work," he added, "and we may not have for decades. We have to assume, however, that the potential for 9.0 subduction zone earthquakes is much more widespread than originally thought."

Both Tohoku and Sumatra were written off in the textbooks as not having the potential for a major earthquake, Goldfinger pointed out.

"Their plate age was too old, and they didn't have a really large earthquake in their recent history," Goldfinger said. "In fact, if you look at a northern Japan seismic risk map from several years ago, it looks quite benign -- but this was an artifact of recent statistics."

Paleoseismic evidence of subduction zone earthquakes is not yet plentiful in most cases, so little is known about the long-term earthquake potential of most major faults. Scientists can determine whether a fault has ruptured in the past -- when and to what extent -- but they cannot easily estimate how big a specific earthquake might have been. Most, Goldfinger says, fall into ranges -- say, 8.4 to 8.7.

Nevertheless, that type of evidence can be more telling than historical records because it may take many thousands of years to capture the full range of earthquake behavior.

In their analysis, the researchers point to several subduction zone areas that previously had been discounted as potential 9.0 earthquake producers -- but may be due for reconsideration. These include central Chile, Peru, New Zealand, the Kuriles fault between Japan and Russia, the western Aleutian Islands, the Philippines, Java, the Antilles Islands and Makran, Pakistan/Iran.

Onshore faults such as the Himalayan Front may also be hiding outsized earthquakes, the researchers add. Their work was supported by the National Science Foundation.

Goldfinger, who directs the Active Tectonics and Seafloor Mapping Laboratory at Oregon State, is a leading expert on the Cascadia Subduction Zone off the Pacific Northwest coast of North America. His comparative studies have taken him to the Indian Ocean, Japan and Chile, and in 2007, he led the first American research ship into Sumatra waters in nearly 30 years to study similarities between the Indian Ocean subduction zone and Cascadia.

Paleoseismic evidence abounds in the Cascadia Subduction Zone, Goldfinger pointed out. When a major offshore earthquake occurs, the disturbance causes mud and sand to begin streaming down the continental margins and into the undersea canyons. Coarse sediments called turbidites run out onto the abyssal plain; these sediments stand out distinctly from the fine particulate matter that accumulates on a regular basis between major tectonic events.

By dating the fine particles through carbon-14 analysis and other methods, Goldfinger and colleagues can estimate with a great deal of accuracy when major earthquakes have occurred. Over the past 10,000 years, there have been 19 earthquakes that extended along most of the Cascadia Subduction Zone margin, stretching from southern Vancouver Island to the Oregon-California border.

"These would typically be of a magnitude from about 8.7 to 9.2 -- really huge earthquakes," Goldfinger said. "We've also determined that there have been 22 additional earthquakes that involved just the southern end of the fault. We are assuming that these are slightly smaller -- more like 8.0 -- but not necessarily. They were still very large earthquakes that if they happened today could have a devastating impact."

Other researchers on the analysis include Yasutaka Ikeda of University of Tokyo, Robert S. Yeats of Oregon State University, and Junjie Ren, of the Chinese Seismological Bureau.

Key parties in Israeli elections

Summary of the main political parties competing in Israel's parliamentary elections. Exit polls show a small majority for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his hawkish allies. Final results expected early Wednesday.

?Likud: Led by incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Likud holds tough positions in stalled talks with the Palestinians and advocates strong international action ? possibly including a last-resort military strike ? against arch-enemy Iran's nuclear facilities. Netanyahu has grudgingly accepted the idea of a Palestinian state, though his party traditionally claimed the West Bank and east Jerusalem for Israel. Likud teamed up on a joint list with former Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman's ultranationalist Yisrael Beitenu for Tuesday's election, but the two parties have not merged.

?Yisrael Beitenu: The far-right secular party is the most hawkish in Netanyahu's current coalition and placed third in the last election in 2009. Its leader, Lieberman, has been indicted on charges of fraud and breach of trust, and the future of his party and his political career could hinge on how the case unfolds.

According to exit polls, the two lists took 31 seats together in the 120-seat parliament. Running separately, the two parties won 42 seats in the outgoing house.

?Yesh Atid: Founded by former TV personality Yair Lapid, the party represents secular, middle-class interests and says less money should be spent on settlements and stipends for the ultra-Orthodox. According to exit polls, Yesh Atid took far more than polls projected, 19 seats, which could make it the second-largest party in parliament.

?Labor: A centrist party led by former broadcast journalist Shelly Yachimovich. Labor hopes to gain votes with an emphasis on closing Israel's economic gaps and a moderate approach to negotiations with the Palestinians. Labor held second place in pre-eleciton polls after the joint Likud-Yisrael Beiteinu list. The party governed the country from its founding in 1948 until 1977, and twice since. According to exit polls, Labor won 15 seats.

?Jewish Home: Representing modern Orthodox Jews, the party has surged in the polls on the back of a strong pro-settlement message and the appeal of its charismatic leader, high-tech millionaire Naftali Bennett, to secular Jews. According to exit polls, Jewish Home won 11 seats.

?Shas: Founded in the early 1980s by ultra-Orthodox Jews of Middle Eastern origin who felt marginalized. Its followers tend to be hawkish and the party traditionally has been a Likud ally, even though two decades ago, its spiritual leader, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, ruled that saving lives is more important than keeping territory. The party emphasizes social welfare for its low-income constituency. According to exit polls, Shas won about 12 seats.

? Hatnua: The party of former Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni was formed less than two months ago expressly to present an alternative to voters distressed by the stalemate in peacemaking throughout Netanyahu's four-year tenure. Livni has promised an aggressive push for peace with the Palestinians. According to exit polls, the party took six seats.

Icy fog traps lung-busting soot over Salt Lake City

Ravell Call / The Deseret News via AP

An inversion cloud covers downtown Salt Lake City. A group of Utah doctors is declaring a health emergency over the Salt Lake City area's lingering air pollution problem.

By Paul Foy, The Associated Press

Michelle Francis keeps one eye on Utah's air quality index and the other on her 9-year-old daughter's chronic asthma these days. The air pollution is so awful in her Salt Lake City suburb that Francis keeps her daughter indoors on many days to prevent her cough from being aggravated.

"When you add all the gunk in the air, it's too much," Francis said.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has singled out the greater Salt Lake region as having the nation's worst air for much of January, when an icy fog smothers mountain valleys for days or weeks at a time and traps lung-busting soot.

The pollution has turned so bad that more than 100 Utah doctors called Wednesday on authorities to immediately lower highway speed limits, curb industrial activity and make mass transit free for the rest of winter. Doctors say the microscopic soot ? a shower of combustion particles from tailpipe and other emissions ? can tax the lungs of even healthy people.

"We're in a public-health emergency for much of the winter," said Brian Moench, a 62-year-old anesthesiologist and president of Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment, which delivered the petition demanding action at the Utah Capitol.

The greater Salt Lake region had up to 130 micrograms of soot per cubic meter on Wednesday, or more than three times the federal clean-air limit, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

That's equivalent to a bad day in the Los Angeles area.

Related: You know it's cold when ski resorts close the mountain

For 2 million Utah residents, there is no escape except to the snow-capped mountains that gleam in the sunshine thousands of feet higher, or to resort towns like Park City, where the Sundance Film Festival is under way.

"I wish there was something we could do about it," Francis, a school teacher 10 miles north of Salt Lake City, said.

Authorities have prohibited wood burning and urged people to limit driving. Vehicle emissions account for more than half of the trapped pollutants.

Utah regulators are working on a set of plans to limit everyday emissions, including a measure to ban the sale of aerosol deodorants and hair spray that contain hydrocarbon propellants. Those plans, however, will take years to show results.

Doctors say people ? especially pregnant women and children ? should stay indoors, or at least avoid active outdoor exercise under the sickening yellowish haze. Elderly people with heart disease are most at risk, Moench said.

"If you can see it, you don't want to breathe it. Think about what's going into your body," Salt Lake City pediatrician Ellie Brownstein said. "It's essentially like smoking. Instead of breathing clean air, you're breathing particles that make it harder for your lungs to function and get oxygen."

Snow cover amplifies the phenomena called a temperature inversion ? Salt Lake City was a foggy freezer box Wednesday at 18 degrees, while Park City basked in sunny 43-degree weather. The warmer air aloft acted like a lid on the frigid valley air, leaving it with no place to go.

For weeks, industrialized cities in northern China have been dealing with bouts of sickening smog several times more toxic than Utah's. But by U.S. standards, Utah's pollution index is off the charts with readings routinely exceeding a scale that tops out at 70 micrograms a cubic meter. The EPA sets a standard for clean air at no more than 35 micrograms.

"People think the health implications are limited to asthma ? that's only a drop in the bucket," Moench said. "For every pregnant woman breathing this stuff, this is a threat to her fetus through chromosome damage. It sets people up for a lifelong propensity for all sorts of diseases."

It's Easier to be Self-Righteous When You Avoid Communication ...

communication, improving communication, communicating, interpersonal communicating, vulnerability, avoid communication, self righteous, complicated, selfrighteousness

The longer you can go without input from someone else, the easier it is to convince yourself that your point of view is the only one that really matters. We all love nurturing our own beliefs.

We go over & over & over something that bothers us and slowly build up greater certainty over time that we are right.?Who wants the messiness of another point of view?

Communication requires work. Communication requires vulnerability. Communication requires the complicatedness of incorporating at least 2 points of view.

Self righteousness is all about maintaining one point of view. Self Righteousness is all about being impervious. Self righteousness is black & white and therefore simple.

It?s easier to be self-righteous when texting. It?s easier to be self-righteous and not answer the phone. Who wants the uncertainty & confusion of listening to someone else?

Oh, how we love to hoard our own ideas about what happened. Often in therapy I make suggestions of another possibility or way to look at something. Therapy is not about the self-indulgence of being self-righteous. (Most people have friends who can help out with that.)

Communication is a risk. You are opening yourself up to understanding things in a different way.

Communication that has depth over time means it?s possible to influence someone else or to be influenced by someone else. This is why I miss doing group therapy. Groups offer so much more in healing because of the quality of communication. The possibilities for new connections to yourself & others are powerful forces. People in groups share a humbleness about life?s struggles.

My experience in real communication is that there is often humbleness because there is vulnerability.

In previous posts I?ve mentioned that most couples have what I call parallel monologues instead of true dialogue. A monologue is a way to be self-righteous, it?s how to maintain the status quo in your head. ?I love it when I can do both sides of the conversation because then I?m sure to be right!?

Self righteous dumps are frequent in relationships. ?I?m not going to give you the respect of asking what happened, I?m going to enjoy the deliciousness of assuming I know instead. Then I?ll just blow you away with all my hoarded, distorted truths so you feel bad and don?t bother me anymore.?

Communication combined with openness & vulnerability can add so much depth to every relationship, if you are willing to make the time for it.

Doug Marrone speaks to the press for the first time as head coach of the Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, New YorkReuters

One of the first big decisions new Bills coach Doug Marrone is going to be in on will be at quarterback.

And he?ll have some inside information on the proceedings, one way or another.

Marrone didn?t shed much light on the status of incumbent starter Ryan Fitzpatrick during his introductory press conference.

?I haven?t had the time to make those evaluations,? Marrone said, via Jay Skurski of the Buffalo News. ?I don?t talk about players in the press. I?m looking forward to evaluating this time with our great scouting staff, getting to know them, and starting that process.?

Of course, he can start much sooner, as he and Fitzpatrick share an agent, Jimmy Sexton.

It might be hard for Sexton to make both clients happy, as Fitzpatrick is due a $3 million roster bonus in March, and it?s no sure thing that happens. Bills GM Buddy Nix was emphatic about drafting a quarterback this year, to the extent of advocating for trading up to get one.

?We covered that, just like we covered everything, but I don?t think we emphasized that any more,? Nix said when asked whether the quarterback situation came up during Marrone?s interview.

One of the draftable quarterbacks they?re looking at will be Ryan Nassib, a three-year starter for Marrone at Syracuse.

?I love him. He did an outstanding job for our football team. He?s really grown in the last couple of years; he put a lot of emphasis on the leadership role and really took over the team. He?s a player that has gotten quite a bit better during the year,? Marrone said of Nassib, during an appearance on the NFL Network. ?He?s going to be playing in this league. I haven?t studied the draft, I haven?t gone through that; that?s down the road for me as far as the process of what I have to go through. But I do know that he?ll be in this league, so I?m excited for him.?

Figuring out that position will be his first priority, and his connections with his agent and his college will at least give him a jump-start on the process.

Kombucha Challenge Signup Page - Real Food Forager

Post image for Kombucha Challenge Signup Page

Today is the Day to Challenge Yourself

It?s time to take control of your health. Adding traditional cultured foods and beverages into your diet can be one of the most beneficial things you can do for your health. I know for me it is very important. I made a new year?s resolution to add more fermented foods and drinks to my diet and to learn how to make them at home. In particular, I am finally drinking kombucha and I hope the Challenge will help you do the same! I hope you join me in taking this giant step forward. Let?s share information, support and recipes!

We Are Too Clean and Have Lost Our ?old friends?

The beneficial bacteria, yeasts, fungi, viruses and even worms (read more about that here) that inhabit our intestines are our friends. They are supposed to live there, having evolved inside of us over hundreds of thousands of years. They do much for us and in return we give them home and hearth. These microscopic critters are our friends and as such must be treated with respect and generosity.

Over the course of the past hundred years, with urbanization, better sanitation, refrigeration and better living conditions, we have become more sterilized. Conventional attitudes have a firm belief in the germ theory and medicine quickly responds to the slightest sniffle with an antibiotic. We have done a good job in killing off potential pathogens, but also our beneficial bacteria as well.

Additionally, with the advent of refrigeration it was no longer necessary to ferment foods in order to preserve them. However, the symbiotic nature of our relationship with our microflora was not taken into account and most of us are depleted and out of balance, because we do not have the volume of beneficial bacteria we need.

For vibrant health we need to culture, nurture and revere our microbiome (bacteria, yeasts, fungi, viruses, helminthes).

Join the Kombucha Challenge!

Start to drink and learn how to make this amazing functional, living beverage a part of your life. You may start at any time and be at any level of competence. Beginners are welcome as well as the seasoned kombucha fan!

My goal with this challenge is to engage as many people as possible to the health benefits of fermented foods and kombucha in particular ? to teach them the simple skills that will develop their confidence to move forward in their health goals.

Make a goal

It?s all about kombucha! Start to drink a little at each meal as soon as possible. You don?t have to make it at home! You can start by buying it at your local health food store before you commit to making it at home. As with any probiotic food, start with just a little and work up the amount slowly in order to let your body become accustomed to the new food. This is a living food and some people will react to it, especially anyone with a known health problem. So don?t go and guzzle a full glass of kombucha on the first day unless you ordinarily do this!

I started several weeks ago to drink 1 ? 2 ounces with my meals. I already feel a difference in my digestion! My goal is to work up to 1/2 cup at each meal and some sips in between, as I found that it helps me control sugar cravings. That?s why I?m so excited about it! You can feel the benefits almost immediately!

I?ve tried several of the flavors and have a good idea about which ones I really like best. I can?t wait until my home brewed kombucha is ready and I can start experimenting at home!

If you are already drinking kombucha perhaps your goal can be to learn how to brew it at home. We will be going over that over the 4 week Challenge period.

If you are already home brewing perhaps your goal can be to switch to the continuous brewing method or to get some of your friends involved in this Kombucha Challenge because you know it is so healthy.

Here are the Rules:

You may set one or more goals for the Challenge according to which level you would like to achieve. Please leave a comment stating your goal(s). When you publicly state your goals, you are more apt to follow through.

There is one mandatory action to be included in the Kombucha Challenge ? you MUST sign up for the Komucha Challenge newsletter below. This will keep us in direct communication with new information, links and coupon codes.

Level 1: Goal is to start drinking kombucha whether it is home brewed or store bought.

Level 2: Goal is to learn how to brew it at home.

Level 3: Switch to the continuous brewing system.

Level 4: Goal is to share your love of komucha with others by inviting them to this challenge or by giving a beautiful baby SCOBY to a friend.

LaCie announces the 5big Thunderbolt series: up to 20TB capacity starting at $1,199

If LaCie's 2big Thunderbolt isn't quite large enough to handle your storage needs, a solution is on the way. At CES, the outfit has revealed the robust 5big Thunderbolt series that can handle five hot-swappable drives (as the moniker suggests) while offering up to 20TB capacity with advertised speeds capable of notching 785MB/sec -- when appropriately configured. Wielding a handful of said drives affords the device custom RAID configurations allowing RAID 0 on three units while the remaining two reside in RAID 1. Dual Thunderbolt ports make daisy chaining an option -- if your wallet can handle it, of course. If you're concerned about the heat output, the 5big sports a heat-dissipating enclosure alongside a Noctua cooling fan and exhausts to keep things at a manageable temperature. Both 10TB and 20TB configurations will be available with a beginning price tag of $1,199 from LaCie and other retailers at a yet-to-be-announced date. For now, the full PR rests past the break and a closer look awaits in the gallery below.

The Elements of Curb Appeal: A Check List - Articles :: Networx

undefinedThese are the two things you need to know about curb appeal: You have seven to ten seconds to make a first impression; details make up the whole. Paying particular attention to details will ensure that the whole front view of your house makes a super first impression. This check list will provide you with a rubric of details to pay attention to when you are putting your house on the market.

Landscaping:

1. Is the lawn trimmed and neat? Have brown patches in the grass been replaced or repaired?

2. Have all borders been edged?

3. Are trees and bushes neatly trimmed?

4. If your yard lacks trees and bushes, do you have plans to plant some?

5. Have you hidden unsightly features, like a central air conditioning unit, with green plants?

6. Have you removed all clutter and debris from your lawn and driveway?

Concrete:

1. Is your driveway cracked or chipped? If so, repave it.

2. Is your walkway in good repair? If you have a walkway made of bricks or pavers, weed in between the bricks or pavers, and replace any broken or chipped bricks or pavers. Be sure to edge around the front walk. For paver replacement inspiration, Artistic Paver Mfg., a concrete contractor in Miami who specializes in pavers, has posted some awesome pictures on Hometalk.com.

House facade:

1. Does your house have a neutral, classic color scheme?

2. Is your paint fresh-looking, with no moldy, bubbled, or peeling spots? If not, you need the services of a professional painter.

3. Your inside window treatments are visible from the outside. Do they match? Are they neat-looking and in good repair?

4. Have you installed shutters next to your windows? Adding matching, attractive shutters is a classic way to improve curb appeal.

Front door:

1. Is your front door new-looking? If not, replace it with a new door.

2. Update front door hardware with shiny, new hardware. Make sure that the hardware is consistent with the style and period of your house.

3. Is your mail box attractive? If not, replace it with a modern and attractive mail box.

4. Are your house numbers prominent? New, bold, attractive house numbers are a detail that improve curb appeal.

5. How do your exterior light fixtures look? Up-to-date, fashionable exterior light fixtures are attractive to buyers.

Gingerbread spice hot chocolate mix

A delicious mug of hot chocolate with a little spice of gingerbread will warm up cold winter nights.

By Caroline Lubbers,?Whipped, The Blog / January 4, 2013

The spices in this homemade cocoa add a hint of warmth.

Let?s not call it quits on all the decadence just yet. The holiday spirit is still lingering in the air and for many of us lucky souls, our palates have become so accustomed to sweet treats. It seems that much of the country is experiencing intense weather and plenty of snow. Whether you are recovering from difficult holiday travel or tucked snug inside, my guess is that clutching a mug of spiced cocoa will hit the spot.

The spice mixture I created for this cocoa was inspired by Dutch cookies called speculaas. They have the usual gingerbread spices and sometimes an added bite from a touch white pepper. If you didn?t know the white pepper is in this recipe, you probably wouldn?t guess it by sipping the cocoa. It adds a subtle, additional warmth to the back of your throat.

I intended to make large jars full of this cocoa mix and give it as Christmas gifts but that became one more project heaped on my ?didn?t get around to it? pile. Instead, I have had a bowl of the spice mixture on my counter for weeks and have sprinkled it into cocoa and most recently steel cut oatmeal, which was delicious along with a large spoon of brown sugar.

The flavor and quality of this cocoa will be determined entirely by the type of chocolate you buy. Though the price is higher, Callebaut, Valrohna or something comparable will transform this into a decadent sipping experience.

Gingerbread Spice Hot Chocolate Mix
?Makes 8 servings

2 teaspoons cinnamon

2 teaspoons ground all spice

2 teaspoons ground ginger

1 teaspoons ground nutmeg

1 teaspoons ground clove

1/4 teaspoon finely ground white pepper

1/4 teasopon kosher salt

1/2 cup vanilla sugar (or regular white sugar), see recipe below

1/2 cup good quality cocoa powder (I like Valrohna)

1 cup (about 8 ounces) finely chopped high quality dark, semi-sweet chocolate (I used Callebaut)

Mix everything except the chopped dark chocolate in a bowl with a whisk until well combined. Stir in the dark chocolate until mixed. To make cocoa, stir 1/4 cup of the mixture into 8 ounces of hot milk. Adjust the amount of chocolate you want for weaker or stronger cocoa.

How to Make Vanilla Sugar:

1 whole vanilla bean

2 cups granulated sugar

Put sugar in a bowl. Slice the vanilla bean lengthwise and scrape out the insides with a knife. Put the small seeds in the bowl with the sugar. Stir with a whisk to combine until the small black seeds are evenly mixed with the sugar. Put the sugar in an airtight container. Press the vanilla pod into the middle (this will give some extra flavor and aroma). Let the sugar sit for at least 48 hours or ideally, up to 2 weeks. Remove the pod before using.

Google Glass features 'still in flux', 'no plans' to display advertising

It's been a few months since we heard anything new about Google Glass -- fortunately, IEEE Spectrum has managed get a few questions answered by the project's lead, Babak Parviz. While noting that Google Now could be "very compelling" on the new hardware, he stopped short of saying that it would make an outing on the headset. There will, however, be a cloud-based API, which Parviz hopes will help to maintain a consistent user experience -- it's already been used to build both the email and calendar functions on Glass. Perhaps more importantly, when asked whether Google Glass would display advertising to its users, the project lead said that there were no plans for ads on the device. Google's keeping it vague with a precise feature list, but hardware-wise, Parviz says that the team is aiming for the headwear to last a full day on a single charge, with work still underway on head gestures -- still likely to be the least subtle input option alongside the (now patented) trackpad and voice commands. He added that the product is still on track to ship to those early 'explorers' early this year -- we're already polishing our glass block in anticipation.

Cold weather businesses heating up

AKRON, Ohio - It may not be fun weather to experience as you walk outside to grab your morning paper or head off to work, but some businesses that thrive when the temperatures dip well below zero, are loving the cold snap.

Business has been booming at Boston Mills Ski Resort. Workers continue to make snow as long as the temperature stays below 28 degrees.

Steven Mackle, marketing director for Boston Mills and Brandywine Ski Resort, said skiers are responding. Large crowds have hit the slopes each day since the season opener last Friday.

"I don't have the exact number, but it was crazy here. A lot of people are just excited to come out and get on the hill. Being in Ohio, skiers know that they only have a couple of months to get their skiing and snowboarding in," Mackle said.

Buckeye Sports Center at Boston Mills has definitely noticed a spike in sales. It's a welcome sight, especially after an unusually warm winter last year hurt the bottom line.

"The demand was really pent up. They opened up and we had lines everywhere, everyday. It has been a great opening weekend," said Pete Schram, manager of the store.

Carl Swan, the owner of Swan Hardware in Akron, said he has sold about eight pallets of rock salt and ice melt this winter season. That's about the triple the amount that was sold at this time last year. Swan expects demand to grow as the cold lingers.

"Probably sales haven't been quite what they should have been because people had stuff left over from last year. If it stays cold for another few weeks, we'll start selling more stuff," Swan said.

Lock 3 in Akron also expects to see a jump in the number of people visiting the ice rink and Reindeer Run, a man-made sledding hill that opened up last winter.

The cost to ride a sled down the hill is $3 for a half hour.

"The weather is being a lot more cooperative this year than it was last? year. It's (the hill) really fast," said Rachel Roukey, assistant manager of Lock 3.

Ice skates can also be rented for $3 or you can bring your own and skate for free.

Strength Exercises Great for Seniors - In Home Health Care ...

Pittsburgh Home Care Service Holiday gatherings when Mom is still trying to play hostess after recovering from an illness and Dad is struggling to be the life of the party, even as his dementia is worsening, often highlight an older adult?s frailties more so than any other times of the year. Even families of healthy older adults could begin to see changes from year to year.

Some of what?s happening can be attributed to the effects of aging such as a loss of balance, muscle strength and flexibility. A lot of seniors deal with conditions that make standing for long hours baking and cooking more difficult. Other seniors experience an inability to recognize pain.

That?s why building back strength can be so important. I would suggest developing an individualized fitness program, if the doctor approves. Many seniors have more than one chronic condition and are dealing with osteoporosis and arthritis, which can make moving more difficult. Strength exercises can be good for arthritis sufferers, helping them strengthen their muscles to do the work again.

Many seniors also prefer exercising with other older adults ? at least that?s what those seniors who come to EngAge Wellness, located in the Home Instead Center for Successful Aging, tell us. We focus on whole person wellness ? incorporating social, physical, spiritual, intellectual, emotional and vocational.

Diet is another way to help keep older adults on track. Everything in moderation, as they say.

It?s important for those who might be preparing a holiday meal to keep their senior family members? dietary needs in mind. Look for salt substitutes and ways to replace higher-fat ingredients with more healthy alternatives.

For example, some cake recipes allow replacing butter with a healthy option, such as applesauce, or using sugar substitutes or sugar-free ingredients. One popular brownie recipe even calls for using the healthy high-fiber option of black beans?just don?t tell guests what they?re eating if you think they might not find such an ingredient appetizing.

Finally, learn from your senior loved one, and his or her doctor, the warning signs that could indicate trouble. If an older adult is diabetic, watch for the signs that would mean blood sugar is too high or too low. If Mom has congestive heart failure, look for swelling in the feet and possible trouble breathing.

Exercise and wellness are just as important for busy family caregivers. I?d recommend a program for caregivers, too, along with participating in a class like Tai Chi to relieve stress. Practicing wellness leading up to and during the holidays can help make the new year brighter for both seniors and caregivers.

CAREGivers from?Home Instead Senior Care can make a difference in your life by providing companionship and support.
