Body weight and body composition impact performance in every single sport, with vast differences between more weight dependent sports (e.g. running) and less weight dependent sports (e.g. swimming). However, many ?A? type athletes take decreasing body weight to the extreme, resulting in poor health and eventually poor performance. In sport, this is primarily termed ?Female Athlete Triad?, although this is not immune to males. Many times this issue can either initially go unnoticed by coaches and support staff or is ignored due to the delicate nature of body weight. This short presentation will take a physiology/elite coach perspective at the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to ideal body composition and periodization, using an elite female middle-distance athlete as a case-study.
